Ladyjacks Take Second at Texan Match Play

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Women's Golf team competed yesterday at the Texan Match Play event taking second in the event after a narrow loss to host team Tarleton State in the championship. The Ladyjacks beat Prairie View A&M earlier in the morning by a score of 4-0-1 to advance to the championship against Tarleton State.
The match play event featured a Ryder Cup style scoring method with the pairing competing on a per hole basis and the first to win more holes than the other with less holes remaining to play was crowned the victor.
The Ladyjacks won four out of five matches against Prairie View A&M in the first round to advance to the Championship Match against Tarleton State who swept Texas Southern in their first-round matchup.
For the Ladyjacks, Jessica Aguirre finished first clinching her match after just 14 holes finishing five up with four holes to go. Valerie Routzong won her match after 15 holes leading her opponent by five with just three holes to go. Avree Fields then clinched her match after 15 holes finishing four up with three holes to go. Sydni Leung was the next to finish her round off with a victory winning her match one up through all 18 holes. Sloane Bennett was the last to finish up her match in which she tied her opponent to start the day off for the Ladyajcks.
The Ladyjacks fell short in the championship round by a score of 3-1-1.
In the championship round Jessica Aguirre was the first to finish falling to the Texans Lou Deltombe who won the match in just 11 holes finishing up eight with seven to go. Valerie Routzong handed the Texans' a loss in the championship bout after winning her match finishing all 18-holes one up on her opponent. Avree Fields was next to finish falling to Mathilde Brogens who won after finishing the 16th hole taking a three-hole lead with just two to play. Sloane Bennett fell short to Sofia Rodriguez after the 16th hole in which Rodriguez won by a score of four-holes up with two to go. The Rodriguez victory helped to clinch the title for the Texans. Sydni Leung and the Texans' Rebecca Fernandez were locked in a battle and finished tied after playing all 18 holes.
The Ladyjacks are back in action October 22-24 at the Little Rock Women's Golf Classic in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
