Avery Brittingham Scores Career-High 21 Points as Ladyjacks Axe the Bearkats

HUNTSVILLE, Texas- Stephen F. Austin defeated Sam Houston, 62-55 Thursday night. SFA improves to 17-3 (7-1 WAC) while SHSU falls to 8-10 (4-4 WAC).
SFA jumped out to a 7-0 lead off two layups by Avery Brittingham and a three-pointer by Tyler McCliment-Call. Aiyana Johnson and Kyla Deck scored two layups at the end of the quarter to extend the Ladyjacks lead to nine points, 19-10. The lead grew to double digits after a five-point scoring run with 7:27 left in the first half. SFA went on another seven-point run toward the end of the half, and then SHSU scored the last final four points of the half, 35-24. The Ladyjacks continued to extend their lead in the third quarter largely in part due to the free throw shooting. The final six points that SFA scored in the quarter were from the free throw line. The Ladyjacks went into the fourth quarter with an 18 point lead, 51-33. The Bearkats attempted to make a comeback in the final few minutes by scoring 12 points, but SFA was able to hold them off and win by seven points.
The Ladyjacks led the Bearkats in several stat categories including, points in the paint (34-26), fast break points (12-9), bench points (22-14), field goal percentage (46.5-38.2), three-point percentage (27.3-20.0) and free throw percentage (82.6-73.3). Brittingham led the Ladyjacks with a career-high 21 points and shot 9-10 from the field and 3-4 from the free throw line. Johnson led the team with six rebounds, followed by Brittingham, Kurstyn Harden, Kyla Deck and Tyler McCliment-Call each grabbed four. Jordan Harrison led SFA with five assists as she continues to lead the conference in assists and assists per game. Harrison and Angel Scott continue to be disrupters on the defensive end as they each recorded three steals.
SFA will be at home this Saturday, January 28th at 2:00 p.m. against California Baptist as part one of a double-header.
