RIVERSIDE, CA - The Stephen F. Austin women's basketball program aims to get back on the win column after a close game at Grand Canyon with a win against California Baptist in the golden state this Thursday.
Ladyjacks Statistical Analysis
Although going through a minor setback, the Ladyjacks still sit at a very favorable 12-3 overall record and 5th in the WAC standings.
The Ladyjacks remain top ten in the nation in field goal percentage (6th), three-point percentage (7th), and assists per game (9th). The 'Jacks could look to add another statistic to that list with a couple more steals as they are 12th in the nation in steals per game.
Coach Kellogg has no shortage of players who are able to put points on the board, as he currently has eight Ladyjacks who average more than seven points a game. Three of the 'Jacks average more than ten points a game, with Aiyana Johnson leading the way with 12.7 ppg. Johnson now sits at a 50% field goal percentage, one of four players to have a percentage of 50% or more with at least 80 attempts on goal.
SFA has one of the best core bench players in the nation with Kurstyn Harden, Kyla Deck, and Destini Lombard. Harden is a dangerous threat when she has the ball in the paint, as she leads the team with a 63.3% field goal percentage, making 64 buckets on 98 attempts. She also has the second most rebounds on the team with 92 to her name. Both Deck and Lombard are a threat to put three's on the board when left open beyond the arc, having a 37.7% and 45.2% three-point percentage, respectively. Lombard has the second most steals on the team with 27 as well.
A Look at the Lancers
The Lancers take on the Ladyjacks with a 7-8 overall record although having one of the best records in the conference with 3-1. Cal Baptist is coming off a two-game winning streak and have won their last four games at the CBU Events Center.
One reason for the Lancer's record being below .500 is that they are ranked 4th in the nation when it comes to three-point attempts per game, but their percentage beyond the arc as a team is 24.4% (10th in the conference).
One thing that the Lancers do well is taking advantage of their free-throw attempts. They are ranked first in the conference, 22nd in the nation, in free-throws made per game with 15.73. Ladyjacks need to be cautious when playing aggressive on defense and not let the Lancers get any free shots.
Grace Schmidt is one of the few players to play every game of the season for the Lancers. She leads the team with a 45.8% field goal percentage, 12.8 points per game, and 79 total rebounds.
Last Match against CBU: Ladyjacks Dominate CBU, 79-62
In a highly anticipated matchup, the SFA women's basketball dominated from the opening whistle taking a stronghold atop the WAC conference standings with a 79-62 win over CBU Saturday in the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
Zya Nugent poured in a game-high 23 points going 7-of-18 from the floor in addition to grabbing nine rebounds. Aiyana Johnson followed with 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting. Johnson added 11 rebounds for a double-double. Stephanie Visscher also earned a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Ladyjacks held the defending WAC champs to just 38 percent shooting from the floor, 10 percentage points below their season average, and 24 percent from behind the three-point arc. SFA shot 47 percent from the floor and 33 percent from deep.
CBU led 10-9 with 3:58 showing on the clock in the first quarter before Visscher converted a layup a minute later sparking the Ladyjacks on a 17-2 run to close the quarter. SFA never looked back from the 16-12 lead after the first outsourcing CBU in two of the final three quarters to earn the comfortable 79-62 win.
Last SFA Match: Ladyjacks Fall Short Against Lopes
Grand Canyon defeated Stephen F. Austin 74-70 on Saturday afternoon. GCU improves to 11-4 (3-1 WAC) while SFA falls to 12-3 (2-1 WAC).
Both teams traded blows in the first quarter, but GCU was able to get the upper hand and held a five-point lead halfway through the quarter. SFA cut that deficit down to two points at the end of the quarter, 21-19. In the second, the Ladyjacks were able to take the lead and extend it to a six-point lead with 6:24 left in the half. SFA went into the locker room with a seven-point lead, 40-33. The Lopes made quick work of their deficit and took the lead back with seven minutes left in the third. The teams battled the rest of the quarter, and GCU went into the quarter break with a one-point lead. Each team held a four-point lead in the fourth, but ultimately GCU came out on top and won the game 74-70.
