ABILENE, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (9-4, 1-0 WAC) grabbed its first Western Athletic Conference triumph over Abilene Christian on Thursday night inside the Teague Center, 64-58. The 'Jacks strung together an explosive first half with eight threes on 57 percent shooting to gain a 12-point lead at the break boosted by huge situational shots in the second half to deter the slightest ACU lead, but the gritty league contest came down to the final possessions of the game.
SFA's staple run was made when the game was tied at 9-9, as the 'Jacks converted on five-straight three's over the course of four minutes to gain a 15-point lead to force an ACU timeout at the 5:01 mark in the first half to set the tone.
The Wildcat comeback came in the second half with just under five minutes to play with a 8-0 run to cut the lead to four, but a pair of made free throws each from Hawkins and Jossell put the 'Jacks back up by seven to secure any major momentum swing with 2:37 on the clock.
Prior in the second half, Jaylin Jackson-Posey's notable three put SFA back up by double-digits to match an ACU bucket at 5:36, soon to be complemented by another statement make from beyond the arc from Jossell at 1:34 to play to go up 61-53. The Lumberjacks were then able to close out the game with three makes at the free throw line.
The Lumberjacks outscored the Wildcats in points off turnovers (18-11) and paint points (30-20), outrebounding ACU 32-22 on the evening.
SFA was led in scoring by Gavin Kensmil (13p/7r/2a/1b/1s), followed by Latrell Jossell (11p/1r/1a) and Nigel Hawkins (10p/5r/2a/1b). Eight Lumberjacks found themselves in the scoring column tonight to enhance the balanced scoring attack.
The 'Jacks will be back in action on Saturday, January 8th at Tarleton. Tip is set for 7:00 p.m.
