STEPHENVILLE, Texas --
The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (9-5, 1-1 WAC) traveled to Stephenville for its second Western Athletic Conference contest of the week for a bout with the Tarleton Texans in Wisdom Gym, coming up short in overtime, 77-71. Nigel Hawkins contributed a career-high night for the 'Jacks despite the loss, leading the way with 22 points and 10 rebounds to complete the double-double.
The 'Jacks led by as many as 12 three times during the first half, as Hawkins poured in 17 of his 22 points during the first 20 minutes of play to secure a 32-28 lead at the break. A 7-2 run teed up by two jumpers and a triple from Hawkins complemented by Latrell Jossell's midrange bucket put the 'Jacks up 27-15 at 3:07, but the Texans finished the half with an 8-0 run to snap the SFA momentum.
While the ballgame was knotted up eight times tonight, a key stanza at 49-49 with 6:23 to go in the second half set the tone for the remainder of the game. David Kachelries converted on a clutch midrange make to boost a late SFA lead at 57-53 with just over two minutes on the clock, only to be matched by a Tarleton 3-pointer plus a pair of makes at the free throw line to give the Texans a 62-60 edge with 26 seconds to play in regulation. Kachelries managed to find his way to the rim and create contact 10 seconds later to knock down a pair of his own to send the game to overtime.
In overtime, Sadaidriene Hall's layup cut the Tarleton led to one (70-69) with two minutes, but the game was closed out by Tarleton free throw shooting.
The Lumberjacks will return to The Sawmill for a matchup with the UTRGV Vaqueros on Tuesday, January 11th at 6:30 p.m.
