CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- After dropping three straight at Chapman Field, the Lumberjacks walked away from Corpus Christi with a series finale win over the Islanders, 5-3. The 'Jacks connected on a handful of hits in each of the prior three games for five combined runs, but the away squad completed a series-high eight hits to secure today's victory.
The Lumberjack pitching staff was critical as well, squaring away eight scoreless innings cushioned by a 5-0 lead before the Islanders rallied in the ninth to score three runs, but the 'Jacks were able to improve to 16-27, 13-18 in SLC play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SFA opened up the first inning with three-straight singles from Skylar Black, Jordan Monacy and Sean Moore (RBI), giving the 'Jacks a 1-0 lead to kick off the game. Cameron Crawford strikes with an RBI single in the fourth to extend the lead to 2-0, only allowing the Islanders to one hit through four complete innings.
Both teams claimed three runs in the ninth inning, started off by Kyle Cullen's RBI triple to score Crawford (HBP), followed by Black flying out to center to bring home Cullen. The fifth run for the 'Jacks was teed up by Jake Zarrello reaching base on a wild pitch to advance three SFA runners, eventually charging in Skyler Jaco (PR) for a 5-0 lead heading into the ninth.
The combination of a double, a walk and a wild pitch gave the Islanders its first tally of the ballgame in the ninth, previously reaching base on seven combined walks thus far. A sacrifice fly and another double resulted in two RBI's with two outs on the board, eventually shut down by pop up to end the game.
