HAMMOND, La. -- The SFA softball team jumped out to a 4-0 lead in Saturday's elimination game against #2 Central Arkansas in Hammond, but watched UCA score five unanswered runs to steal a 5-4 victory and send the regular season champions home. SFA moves to 35-12 on the season with the result.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Ladyjacks got on the board in the first frame off UCA starter Kayla Beaver, as Mackenzie Bennet got on with a two-out single, advanced to second on a walk and came around to score on an RBI single from Bryana Novegil. In the third inning, SFA struck again with two outs, as Marisa Arriaga and Gaby Garcia singled to put SFA into scoring position.
Shaylon Govan then singled to drive in Arriaga and give SFA a 2-0 lead. A fielding error by UCA on a batted ball by Bennett allowed her to reach and Garcia and Govan to score unearned runs and extend the lead to 4-0.
UCA came roaring back in the top of the third, scoring four runs off an RBI double and a three-run homer over the left field wall to tie the game up at 4-4.
An RBI double in the fourth inning gave UCA the decisive run in the contest, as a blown call in the bottom of the seventh inning awarded a double play to the Bears to end the contest.
Bennett was named to the All-Tournament Team for her play over the weekend.
