Govan Sets Single-Season Home Run Record as Ladyjacks Split DH with UCA

CONWAY, AR -- The SFA softball team saw one of its players make history on Saturday, even as the team's impressive 18-game winning streak, a program record in and of itself, come to its eventual end as the 'Jacks split a doubleheader with second place UCA in Conway. SFA secured a 3-0 shutout in the opener behind Shaylon Govan's 14th home run of the season, a single-season high for a Ladyjack, and a complete game, one-hit shutout from Kassidy Wilbur. SFA (28-9) would fall in the nightcap by a 7-2 score, and will go for the series win tomorrow.
GAME ONE
A matchup between two of the league's top pitchers in UCA's Jordan Johnson and Wilbur didn't disappoint, as the low-scoring affair saw SFA strike first in the third inning. A one-out triple down the right field line by Camryn Middlebrook set up Govan, who delivered an RBI single to plate the game's first run. In the fifth inning, Middlebrook's bat set up the Ladyjacks again, as she doubled with one out and came around to score on a two-run home run by Govan, as she sent a Johnson offering over the left field wall for her 14th homer of the season, a new single-season record by a Ladyjack.
UCA didn't manage to get anything going against Wilbur in the circle, as she hurled seven shutout innings of one-hit ball. She walked four batters but struck out eight UCA batters to earn her 24th win of the season. Govan and Middlebrook each tallied a pair of hits to lead SFA.
GAME TWO
UCA's offense found some traction in the second game of the day after being shut down completely in the opener, as they pushed across five runs in the second frame off Reagan Chism (3-1). A two-out single by Govan in the third frame set up SFA to trim the lead, as Gaby Garcia smacked her eighth home run over the wall in left field to cut the lead to 5-2.
UCA pushed across two more runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-2 lead and would hold SFA scoreless the rest of the way to seal the win. Garcia and Lexi Benson led SFA with a pair of hits apiece. Raigan Mock pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless ball in relief of Chism, striking out four UCA batters.
