ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Lumberjacks wrapped up its first three-game series of the season Saturday night, and will head back to Nacogdoches 1-2 against the UT-Arlington Mavericks (2-2). SFA played in two tight games with the hosts, falling 5-3 in Game 1 and 2-1 in Game 2.
"I thought our team really played well," said Head Coach Johnny Cardenas. I thought we defended and pitched sufficient enough to put up a fight in all three games. Offensively, we are going to be better once we get some at-bats underneath our belt. I was very proud of the way our team fought in every game. This was a good weekend to build on."
GAME 1: HOW IT HAPPENED
In Game 1, Jacob Stobart (0-1) started for the Lumberjacks, allowing five hits and four runs, striking out two UT-Arlington batters in five innings on the hill. The Mavericks threw the first punch in this matchup, and were able to grab a 1-0 lead in B1 teed up by a Connor Aube leadoff triple and Dylan Paul reaching second base on fielder's choice to bring in Aube for the first run of the game. UT-Arlington's Andrew Miller powered a solo home run to left center field in B3 to boost the Maverick's lead to 2-0, but SFA was able to string together a sequence in B4.
T4 | LUMBERJACK ACTION
While the Lumberjacks were down two runs early, Dillon Eatman guided SFA momentum by doubling to center to lead off for the 'Jacks. Chaney Dodge singled to left field shortly after, able to snag an extra base on the throw, allowing Eatman to run to 3rd. Sean Moore gave Eatman the green light to run home with a ground out to cut the Maverick's lead in half, 2-1 heading into B4. UT-Arlington connected on another offensive sequence to bring in two more runs in B5 (4-1), but two more runs from SFA in the 8th and 9th wasn't enough to grab the victory, as two runners were left on base in T8. UT-Arlington wins it, 5-3
GAME 2: SFA in SERIES-CLINCHING CONTENTION
The Lumberjacks turned the tables in Game 2 due to a Chaney Dodge double followed an RBI double from Jake Zarrello to score Dodge, and the combination boosted SFA to a 1-0 advantage. Connor Aube delivered in B3 for the Mavericks for a single of his own, and a wild pitch from Joe Todd advanced Aube to 3rd off an Anthony Dominguez ground out. Andrew Miller flied out to right field to score Aube, and the game was tied 1-1. The Mavericks put away one more run in the 4th inning to take a 2-1 lead, and that was all the home team needed to run away with a home victory. UT-Arlington finished the game with two runs on seven hits, as SFA scored one run on seven hits while stranding 11 on base.
