NEW ORLEANS, La. -- The SFA men's basketball rebounded from a halftime deficit against a pesky UNO squad to score 50 second-half points and claim an 89-79 victory over the Privateers on Monday in New Orleans. Gavin Kensmil and Roti Ware powered the 'Jacks with 28 and 24 points, respectively, helping SFA improve to 13-3 on the season and 8-1 in league play on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lumberjacks encountered a peskier Privateer squad on Monday afternoon than they had in the previous outing, and found themselves trailing 42-39 at the halftime intermission after UNO made 14 first-half free throws and tacked on four treys in the frame. Both the 'Jacks and UNO would convert on more then 50 percent of their shots in the first half.
In the second half, the Privateers extended their lead out to as many as eight points (59-51) with just under 15 minutes left to play, but the Lumberjacks would begin to turn the tide from there. A 12-0 run spanning 3:30 of game time turned a 62-55 deficit into a 67-62 lead for SFA, and was begun by a trey from David Kachelries and capped off by a pair of Ware layups and. free throw by Kensmil. From there, the 'Jacks controlled the lead for the remaining 8:25 of play and would stretch the lead to a game-high 10 points in the game's waning moments on a pair of free throws by Kensmil.
LEADERS
Kensmil's 28 points were a game-high, and his 10 rebounds also led all players on the court. David Kachelries led the Lumberjacks with six assists on the day, while Ware led his team in steals (3) and Charlie Daniels swatted three shots on the day. Kachelries added 17 points on the day to go along with his six points.
KEY NUMBERS
After shooting 53 percent from the field in the first half, the Lumberjacks racheted up their attack in the second half, shooting 19-30 (63.3 percent) in the second half. SFA outscored UNO 50-37 in the second half of the game.
The 'Jacks hammered UNO inside the paint to the tune of a 52-28 advantage in points in the paint. The 'Jacks also battered the Privateers on the glass with a 37-23 rebounding advantage.
