
Lumberjacks Hammer Demons in Natchitoches, 83-57

NATCHITOCHES, La. – The SFA men's basketball team kept pace in the tight Southland Conference regular season title race and snapped a six-game winning streak by rival Northwestern State with an 83-57 victory on Wednesday night. The victory improved SFA's record to 14-4 on the season and 10-1 in league play, and was SFA's fourth straight victory in the all-time series with NSU.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lumberjacks fell behind 6-3 in the early going off of a pair of Demon treys, but would tie the game on a triple by Roti Ware. The tightly contested gameplay would continue for the next few minutes, with SFA taking a 15-13 lead off of a pair of Calvin Solomon free throws with just under 13 minutes left to play in the half. SFA's lead would blossom to 13 points (40-27) with a minute left in the half, and the 'Jacks would take a 40-31 lead into the intermission.
In the second half, the Lumberjacks came out firing, outscoring the hosts 21-7 in the first eight minutes of play to take a 61-38 lead. SFA extended the lead out to a game-high 28 points (83-55) with just under a minute left to play after outscoring NSU 43-26 in the second stanza.
LEADERS
Gavin Kensmil led the 'Jacks with 21 points and nine rebounds on the day, converting on 8-13 attempts from the field and adding a team-high three steals, tying Deandre Heckard for the team lead. David Kachelries totaled four assists to lead SFA.
KEY NUMBERS
SFA stuck to its mantra of working through the paint, overpowering NSU to the tune of a 52-10 advantage in points in the paint and outrebounding the hosts 39-32. SFA also totaled 30 points off 19 Demon turnovers and also racked up 18 second chance points.
