Phil Steele Preseason All-Southland Teams Release
NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Four Lumberjack football players were recognized for a total of six preseason honors in the 2020 Phil Steele All-Southland Conference teams release on Friday. Xavier Gipson, Zach Ingram, Amad Murray and Chase Ruiz were each recognized in the release, with Gipson earning three separate placements on the team as an offensive and special teams player.
Gipson, a rising sophomore from Dallas, Texas, brought home Third Team Offense honors as a wideout, First Team Special Teams honors as an all-purpose player and Third Team Special Teams as a kick returner. He racked up team-highs in yardage (934), catches (52) and receiving touchdowns (7), marks which ranked sixth, 14th and tied for ninth on the conference leaderboards. He also ranked fourth in the league in kickoff return yardage (356) and kickoff return average (20.9). His finest games included a five catch, 109-yard performance in which he hauled in a pair of touchdowns against Abilene Christian (Oct. 19), while he set a career-high in yardage with 132 yards against Incarnate Word (Nov. 9).
After playing in 11 games for the 'Jacks last season as a long snapper, Chase Ruiz earns a First Team berth on Special Teams. The League City, Texas native set up kicks for brother Storm Ruiz last season.
Amad Murray earns recognition as a Third Team Defense honoree. The Huntsville, Texas native registered 8.5 tackles for loss and three sacks as a redshirt freshman last season, recording 42 total tackles. On the other side of the line, Zack Ingram makes his way onto the Third Team Offense as an offensive lineman. The 6'7" tackle played in all 12 games for the 'Jacks on the line in 2019.
