Southland Preseason All-Conference Teams Release
FRISCO, Texas -- Sophomore wideout/kick returner Xavier Gipson has been selected to represent SFA on the Preseason All-Conference Teams for football at both positions, per a release from the league office on Wednesday morning. Gipson was tabbed for Second Team All-Conference Offense as a wide receiver and Second Team All-Conference Defense as a kick returning specialist, part of a group of approximately 60 student-athletes spread out amongst the teams.
Gipson, a Dallas native, broke onto the scene as a freshman last season, racking up team-highs in yardage (934), catches (52) and receiving touchdowns (7), marks which ranked sixth, 14th and tied for ninth on the conference leaderboards. He also ranked fourth in the league in kickoff return yardage (356) and kickoff return average (20.9). His finest games included a five catch, 109-yard performance in which he hauled in a pair of touchdowns against Abilene Christian (Oct. 19), while he set a career-high in yardage with 132 yards against Incarnate Word (Nov. 9).
The 5' 9" wideout turned some heads throughout the season, and as such accumulated recognition for his performances on the field. He was named to the Stats LLC Jerry Rice Award watch list midway through the season, an award that recognizes the best freshman competitor among the FCS throughout the season. At the end of the campaign, he was selected as an All-Conference Second Team performer as a wideout, and brought home All-Conference Third Team honors as a kickoff returner as well. Gipson also earned a spot on the HERO Sports Freshman All-American Teams, bringing home First Team honors as a wideout as well.
