SFA Athletics is continuing a new series called My Lumberjack Life. As we approach the start of another academic year, it seemed fitting to give our student-athletes a chance to answer the question: Why SFA?. These stories look at what led each respective student-athlete to pick SFA as their collegiate destination, and what there plans are for the upcoming season.
If you had asked me where SFA was my freshman year of high school, I would have Googled it really fast and told you it's in a small town called Nacogdoches, and most likely pronounced it wrong. At the end of my sophomore year of high school, however, I decided to take a leap of faith and try to get recruited to play Division 1 golf. After doing months of research, I started to send out emails to coaches across the nation. Not too long after, I received an email back from Coach Schroeder saying he would like to learn more about me. As I franticly gathered all the information he asked for, including my swing video and a few upcoming tournaments, I became more intrigued about what SFA was all about.
As I dug into the history of SFA, I quickly learned a few things about Nacogdoches. Nacogdoches is the oldest city in Texas, there are a ton of trees and it wasn't what I have been used to my whole life. Soon after getting in contact with coach, I was invited to go up to SFA for an official visit. Man, was that exciting and nerve-wracking. As I drove from Houston to Nac, I passed by Lufkin and thought to myself "Well at least there's a Target and TJ Maxx here", little did I know that was 30 minutes away from campus. As I arrived on campus I realized that Google was correct about the number of trees here, but they failed to mention how beautiful it was. The deep green trees surrounding campus had me speechless.
As I got to learn more about Coach Schroeder and the team, I learned that this was not a normal small town, everyone here was a family. A community of well-rounded people that work together to make big things happen with what they have. I knew if I came to SFA I would be able to grow connections with amazing people that would push and support me to become better and greater than what I was. When my visit came to an end I took one last look around and tried to gather everything I had just experienced and I realized that what I wanted in a university was what was all around me. I simply felt a special energy here that made me realized this was going to be home for the next few years.
Now that I am a senior I could not be happier with my decision. My love for this school has grown bigger everyday as I have met some of the most incredible friends and mentors here. From the love surrounding the school to the amazing coaches and teammates, I am so proud to be a part of the SFA family. I can't wait to be back and see what my senior year has in store.
