
Nugent, Johnson Combine to Score 33, SFA Falls to Sam Houston State 63-55

HUNTSVILLE, TX -- Zya Nugent and Aiyana Johnson combined to score 33 total points, but the Ladyjacks fell to the Sam Houston State Bearkats 63-55 on the road Saturday.
SFA dropped 16-4 overall and 9-2 in play after the defeat.
The Ladyjacks had two players score in double figures, led by Nugent, who had 20 points. Johnson tacked on a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds and Kennedy Harris added eight points and two steals.
SFA shared the ball well in Saturday's game, racking up 16 assists on 21 made field goals. Johnson's four assists led the Ladyjacks and Marissa Banfield also chipped in with four assists of her own.
SFA forced 24 Sam Houston State turnovers. The Ladyjacks turned those takeaways into 18 points on the other end of the floor. Riley Harvey led the way individually with three steals.

GAME SUMMARY
SFA started out the scoring by going on an 11-0 run to take an early lead with 6:09 left in the first quarter. The Ladyjacks then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 13-8 advantage. SFA did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring eight of its 13 points close to the basket.
The Ladyjacks couldn't maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 32-26.
Sam Houston State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 45-28 advantage before SFA went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Harris, to trim its deficit to 45-33 with 2:27 to go in the third. The Ladyjacks continued to reduce the Sam Houston State lead, shrinking it to 46-37 by the end of the third quarter. SFA played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 11 points in the paint.
Sam Houston State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 57-46 advantage before SFA went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Nugent's layup, to shrink the deficit to 57-51 with 46 seconds to go in the contest. Sam Houston State responded and outscored the Ladyjacks the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 63-55. SFA took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 18 points in the paint.
