12/9/2020 10:17:00 PM | Men's Basketball
WACO, Texas -- The SFA men's basketball team fought valiantly throughout the first half of play inside the Ferrell Center in Waco on Wednesday, only to be outmatch by the Bears in the second half en route to an 83-52 result. SFA moves to 3-1 overall on the season as a result.
After scoring the opening points of the game off of a pair of David Kachelries free throws, the Lumberjacks saw the hosts take a 16-8 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the first half off of a layup by Adam Flagler, part of his game-high 14 points. A jumper by Gavin Kensmil and a trey by Kachelries in quick succession trimmed the lead to just three, 16-13, with 11 minutes remaining in the frame. Baylor answered with a 6-0 run of their own, however, and after a few minutes of back and forth play, took a 29-20 lead with 2:53 left in the half. Roti Ware got a jumper in the paint to go for the 'Jacks, but the rest of the half was all Baylor, as the Bears hit three consecutive three-pointers to turn a seven-point lead into a 38-22 margin at the intermission.
In the opening minutes of the second half, the 'Jacks got the lead down to 16 on a Kensmil jumper, but saw the Bears' offense start to flex their muscle after that, as the grew out of teens over the course of the next few minutes of gameplay. Baylor would outscore the 'Jacks 45-30 in the second half to seal the result.
SFA converted on 18-44 (41 percent) of attempts from the field but could not get a rhythm from beyond the arc (1-11 in the contest). The 'Jacks were uncharacterstically sloppy on the offensive end, accruing 35 turnovers which the hosts turned into 40 points on the other end. Cameron Johnson tallied 11 points to lead the Lumberjacks in the contest, while Kensmil and Kachelries each tallied ten points.
Up next for SFA is a road contest against Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday night. Tip-off for that contest in Monroe is set for 4:30 p.m.
