NACOGDOCHES, Texas --
SFA traveled to Houston for an in-state matchup Friday night, but returned with a hard-fought loss to the Cougars, 61-59. The ballgame consisted of 11 lead changes, with the Ladyjacks taking the lead five times, and knotting it up six times.
The Cougars were up 22-20 at the end of the 1st quarter, sparked by Bri Mitchell who cut that deficit to two by hitting a buzzer beater as time expired in the quarter. As the contest was tied 22-22 with nine minutes to play in the 2nd half from an Avery Brittingham layup, a layup from Aiyana Johnson gave SFA its first lead of the game with six minutes to play, 25-24. The game was tied 29-29 with 3:06 to go in the half, and an SFA steal in the backcourt off of a Houston out of bounds pass with 30 seconds to go gave the Ladyjacks a chance to tie or take the lead at the half, but trailed 35-33.
Both teams started the 3rd quarter with a drought during the first series of possessions, but Stephanie Visscher scored a speedy four points to keep the Ladyjacks within two, 42-40. Aiyana Johnson tied the game up once again at 42-42 to start the 4th quarter, but the Cougars hit a three-pointer to make it 45-44 to put themselves back up by one. Both teams were evenly matched in this quarter, where each team scored seven points.
With 28.6 seconds on the clock (UH, 47-43), Houston hit a 3-pointer to make it a six point game, but Mitchell converted on a layup along with Visscher scoring a scoop layup with 9.6 seconds to play, still 61-59 Cougars. The Ladyjacks had a chance to make a final play with 7.2 seconds to play, but the home team ended the game with a steal to seal the victory.
SFA was led by Aiyana Johnson (17 points, eight rebounds) and Stephanie Visscher (15 points, three rebounds, three assists).
