
Visscher, Johnson and Banfield lead SFA past Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 66-44

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX -- Stephanie Visscher, Aiyana Johnson and Marissa Banfield combined to score 54 of SFA's 66 total points as the Ladyjacks defeated the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 66-44 on the road Wednesday.
SFA improved to 11-3 overall and 4-1 in league play following the win.
Visscher led the Ladyjacks with 20 points. Johnson added a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds and Banfield chipped in as well with 16 points and two steals.
SFA out-rebounded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's 31-26, led by Johnson's 11 boards.
The SFA defense held Texas A&M-Corpus Christi shooters to just 37.5% from the field. The Islanders didn't get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only seven offensive rebounds and scored five second chance points while SFA pulled down 23 defensive rebounds.

GAME SUMMARY
After playing to a 4-4 tie early in the game, SFA went on an 8-0 run with 4:44 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Visscher, to take a 12-4 lead, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. SFA did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring eight of its 12 points close to the basket.
SFA kept its first quarter lead intact before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 3:03 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Visscher, to increase its lead to 27-16. The Ladyjacks kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 29-18 advantage heading into halftime. SFA was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 17 points.
SFA wasted no time building on its lead, going on a 14-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Visscher, to expand its lead further to 43-18 with 4:23 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Islanders had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Ladyjacks still entered the fourth quarter with a 49-26 edge. SFA played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 20 points in the paint.
SFA kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Banfield's three, to grow the lead to 63-42 with 1:42 to go in the contest. The Ladyjacks kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 66-44 win. SFA took advantage of four Texas A&M-Corpus Christi turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of those takeaways.
