PAWLEY'S ISLAND, S.C. - Senior Alexandra Batista and freshman Karina Benavides carded identical scores of 5-over 149 and sit in a tie for 21st place to lead SFA's contingent of women's golfers after day one of competition at the Golfweek Program Challenge.
Of the 15 teams participating in the event, SFA sits in 12th place (20-over 614) through the first two rounds.
Batista birdied four holes on the front nine of round one and three more through her 18 holes of the second round while Benavides racked up a pair of birdies through her first 36 holes. Both of Benavides' birdies came during her last 10 holes of competition.
Also competing for the 'Jacks are Zayda Cedillo, Paola Cortes and Kelly Yang. Through the opening two rounds, Cedillo sits in a tie for 63rd (16-over 160) with Cortes (16-over 160) while Yang (17-over 161) sits in a tie for 68th just one stroke back of Cedillo and Cortes.
Sitting atop the team leaderboard after two rounds, Florida Atlantic carded a 9-over 585 to edge out High Point (10-over 586). Things at the top of the leaderboard are tight, too, as the top six teams are separated by just five strokes as Delaware (11-over 587), USC Upstate (12-over 588), Stetson (13-over 589) and Marshall (14-over 590) round out the top six.
Of the six players who finished under par through the first two rounds, High Point's Sarah Kahn carded the lowest score with a 4-under 140. Close behind Kahn are USC Upstate's Pan Paksanont (2-under 142) and Phu Khine out of UNC Wilmington (2-under 142).
Tuesday morning, the 'Jacks will try to climb further up the leaderboard during the third and final round of the Golfweek Program Championship.
