DALLAS - Senior Darinka Tiboldi, junior Annie Walker and freshman Elena Bleicher all advanced to the second round of the Peruna Draw bracket during the opening day of the SMU Fall Invitational Friday.
Tiboldi secured a 7-6 (4), 6-2 win over Southern Miss competitor Monique Burton to set up an all-SFA second round match against Walker. Facing off against SMU's Tiffany Hollebeck, Walker claimed a 6-2, 6-4 triumph in her first match and only singles showdown of the day.
A second SFA/SMU matchup went to the Ladyjacks as Bleicher scored a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Emma Pieroni to punch her ticket to the second round. Bleicher's opponent Saturday morning will be Wichita State's Lingwei Kong with the winner moving on to the Peruna Draw semifinals.
Advancing by default, sophomore Ai Noa Fabre is set to take on Kansas' Julia Deming Saturday morning in a second-round matchup in the Mustang Draw. Of the three Ladyjacks in the Mustang Draw, Fabre was the only one to move on in the winners bracket as both Nida Kamal and Gabi Guilarte dropped their opening round matchups and will continue play on the back draw side of the bracket Saturday.
In the White Draw doubles bracket, an all-SFA showdown in the back draw finals will come on Saturday. Bleicher and Kamal bounced back from an opening round defeat and handed the SMU tandem of Pieroni and Jakeway a 7-5 loss. They'll face Tiboldi and Walker who also suffered an opening round loss before bouncing back in their second match of the day. SFA's duo bested the Southern Miss pair of Arina Amaning and Ebru Zeynep Yazgan 6-3 to set up their matchup against Bleicher and Kamal.
Fabre and Guilarte experienced success in their opening round doubles match in the Blue Draw. SFA's pair scored a 7-6 (5) triumph over the Kansas duo of Deming and Luniuska Delgado before winding up on the wrong end of a 7-6 (3) score against SMU's Jackie Nylander and Isabella Tcherkes Zade.
