Batista and Yang Garner All-American Scholar Honors from WGCA

Rising senior Alexandra Batista picks up third-straight WGCA All-American Scholar selection, rising junior Kelly Yang claims honor for first time
CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – For the third consecutive year, SFA women's golfer Alexandra Batista has been named a Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American Scholar. A pair of Ladyjacks appear on the list of 1,097 women's collegiate golfers with rising junior Kelly Yang picking up her first WGCA All-American Scholar selection. The duo were recognized with the prestigious honor Monday morning via a press release by the association.
Batista, a rising senior, was also named to the 2018-19 Southland Conference All-Academic Second Team in May after leading SFA on the links with a team-best 76.82 scoring average throughout the season. A multidisciplinary studies major, Batista owns an impressive 3.82 cumulative grade point average and competed in all 33 rounds of golf this past fall and spring. She shot par or better in four different rounds and turned in a career-low 3-under 68 in the opening round of the Red Rocks Invitational in Cornville, Arizona (March 23-24).
The Trophy Club, Texas (Byron Nelson HS), native carded a then program record and career-best 54-hole score of 3-over 216 at the Red Rocks Invitational and posted four top-20 finishes throughout the academic year, including a top-10 placement. Batista placed eighth among 60 golfers at the Islander Classic (Feb. 25-26), while tying for 12th at the University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley Invitational (March 11-12), tying for 17th at the Red Rocks Invitational and tying for 20th at the Lamar Cardinal Challenge (April 1-2).
Yang, a native of Sugar Land, Texas (Clements HS), owns a 3.73 cumulative GPA as a dietetics and nutritional science major. Minoring in combined sciences, Yang also competed in all 33 rounds of golf the Ladyjacks played in 2018-19. She averaged a round score of 81.21 for the season and tied for 26th twice. Improving her score each round, Yang finished with a 22-over 235 to tie for 26th at the UT Arlington Invitational (Oct. 22-23) before notching her best performance at the 2019 Southland Women's Golf Championship in Magnolia, Texas (April 15-17). Yang held steady for a career-low score of 17-over 233, tying for the third-best finish on the team and tying for 26th overall.
The criteria for selection to the WGCA All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50.

The Women's Golf Coaches Association, founded in 1983, is a non-profit organization representing women's collegiate golf coaches.
