BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The 2019 NCAA national champion Ladyjack bowling team not only competed on the lanes at the highest level in the country in 2018-19, SFA also made its mark in the classroom. In fact, the Ladyjacks ranked 22nd among all NCAA bowling programs with a SFA athletic department-best 3.39 grade point average for the 2018-19 academic year. For their hard work in the classroom, the Ladyjacks were recognized Friday by the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) with the announcement of the organization's annual team awards and individual all-academic list.
A total of five SFA bowlers were tabbed NTCA All-Academic with senior Paige Beeney, junior Amber Whitcomb and sophomores Sarah Voiers, Sarah Gill and Dakota Faichnie all achieving a GPA higher than a 3.5 during the most recent academic year.
As a team, the Ladyjacks posted an SFA-best 3.55 GPA for the spring semester while claiming three tournament titles, including the 2019 NCAA Women's Bowling Championship in Wickliffe, Ohio (April 11-13). The national title was the Ladyjacks' second in the last four years and the school's second team national championship in its Division I era.
For Beeney, Voiers and Faichnie, it marks the second-straight year the trio has been named NTCA All-Academic after being selected to the national all-academic list in 2018 as well.
A Salado, Texas, (Georgetown HS), native, Beeney posted an unblemished 4.0 GPA for the 2018-19 academic year as an interdisciplinary studies major with a concentration in education EC-6. She did so while earning NTCA All-American honorable mention honors and bowling her way to the 2019 NCAA Bowling Championship MVP award.
Whitcomb, a native of Austin, Texas (Round Rock HS), achieved a 3.59 GPA for 2018-19 and held a perfect 4.0 GPA during the spring semester as a biology major. Voiers, who is majoring in psychology and hails from Chesterton, Indiana (Chesterton HS), held a 3.79 GPA for the school year and likewise earned a spotless 4.0 mark for the spring.
Gill, a native of Attleboro, Massachusetts (Attleboro HS), notched a 3.58 GPA for the academic year as a kinesiology major after posting a 3.6 GPA in the spring. A native of Innisfil, Ontario, Canada (Nantyr Shores Secondary School), Faichnie boasted a 3.75 GPA during 2018-19 and claimed a 3.73 GPA this past spring while majoring in animal science (pre-veterinary).
Beeney, Voiers, Gill and Faichnie all landed spots on the Southland Bowling League's inaugural All-Academic Team back in May.
Each season the NTCA recognizes NCAA bowling teams that excel academically. To be recognized, programs must have a cumulative team GPA of a 3.2 or higher for the academic school year. For the 2018-19 academic year, 38 bowling programs achieved a cumulative team GPA of 3.2 or higher. NCAA Division II member Virginia State topped the list with a nation-leading 3.64 GPA for 2018-19.
Likewise, the NTCA recognizes student-athletes who have excelled in the classroom throughout the academic year. To be recognized, a student-athlete must have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher for the academic school year. This year there were 257 honorees, representing NCAA bowling programs at 55 schools.
