Campbell drives in 'Jacks' lone run against Cowboys
LAKE CHARLES, La. - Coming out of the gates hot, McNeese scored five runs through the game's first three innings while the SFA baseball team could muster just four hits in a 6-1 setback to the Cowboys Saturday night at Joe Miller Ballpark.
McNeese used a 12-hit attack to notch its third consecutive series win over SFA.
With the loss, the 'Jacks' streak of Southland Conference series wins comes to an end at two. As things currently sit in the league standings, SFA sits in fifth place and is just two games behind both Sam Houston State and Southeastern Louisiana who boast identical 15-8 records in league action.
SCORING SUMMARY
B1 | Three of the Cowboys' four hits in the game's opening frame came from their first three batters. Back-to-back singles by Payton Harden and Nate Fisbeck - who was thrown out at second trying to stretch his single into a double - set the table for Clayton Rasbeary who made matters 1-0 with an RBI double to the wall in right-center. Shane Selman doubled the Cowboys' lead by ripping a two-out RBI double down the left field line.
B2 | The eight-pitch walk SFA starter Jacob Stobart issued to Reid Bourque to start the frame helped the Cowboys tack on their third run of the game. Bourque swiped second before moving to third on a bunt single off the bat of Dustin Duhon. Fisbeck notched his lone RBI of the night two batters later by sending a sacrifice fly deep to center that put SFA in a 3-0 hole.
B3 | By upping its hit total to double digits, McNeese continued to add to its lead. After hitting leadoff man Jake Dickerson, Stobart was pulled from the game for freshman lefty Jaxon Covington. Following a single by Selman, Jacob Stracner moved McNeese's pair of baserunners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. From there Bourque drove Dickerson home with an RBI single that bounced just in front of Nick Daley in shallow center that made things 4-0. Daley, however, hosed Selman at third before uncorking another highlight-reel throw on the next play. Duhon sent an RBI single to straightaway center and Bourque just made it home despite an on-the-money toss by Daley to the dish to up the hosts' lead to 5-0.
B6 | McNeese's advantage grew to six runs as the Cowboys used another extra-base hit to score a run in the sixth. Again it was Rasbeary who provided the base-knock, sending a 1-0 pitch from right-hander Joseph Sgambelluri into the right-field corner for an RBI double that put the 'Jacks in a 6-0 hole.
T7 | SFA's first run in the state of Louisiana during the 2019 season came when the 'Jacks took advantage of a trio of walks issued by McNeese starter Aidan Anderson. The Cowboys' hurler issued a leadoff walk to Brandon Uhse before Jordan Monacy kept the line moving with a single to left. Jake Georgiades won a seven-pitch battle with Anderson and took first on a walk to load the bases before Josh Campbell drew a six-pitch base on balls that pushed Uhse home and cut the home team's lead to 6-1.
AT THE DISH
• Josh Campbell reached base three times - once each on a hit, a walk and a hit-by-pitch - and drove in the 'Jacks' lone run of the contest with his bases-loaded walk in the seventh.
• Monacy and Uhse each reached base twice with the latter scoring the 'Jacks' lone run of the night.
• Four Cowboys posted multi-hit efforts to power McNeese's 12-hit attack. Rasbeary went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a pair of RBI while Duhon went 3-for-3 with an RBI of his own.
• Fisbeck and Selman each went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk while Bourque scored two of the Cowboys' six runs.
ON THE HILL
• No SFA arm went more than two innings and in all the 'Jacks used five pitchers. It was Stobart (6-3) who suffered the loss after giving up four runs on six hits, a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch over two frames of work.
• Anderson (4-5) worked his way through seven innings in order to pick up the win. Over that span, he let up one run on four hits and a trio of walks while striking out four.
ON DECK
• Hoping to take the series finale against McNeese, the 'Jacks will send senior right-hander Trayson Kubo to the hill Sunday afternoon for the third and final regular season meeting between the two clubs. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
