'Jacks finish with six hits, Kubo strikes out six
SUGAR LAND, Texas - Second-seeded Central Arkansas scored a trio of runs in the opening inning and didn't take its foot off the gas pedal as the SFA baseball team suffered an 11-0 eight-inning loss to the Bears in its second Southland Conference Tournament game.
The 'Jacks were out-hit 11-6 in their first league Tournament setback in two years and drop into the lower portion of the bracket in the double-elimination tournament.
SCORING SUMMARY
T1 | A leadoff walk followed by a pair of one-out singles set the table for the Bears to make some noise in the first. On a 2-2 offering from SFA starter Trayson Kubo, Tanner Wiley drilled a three-run double past a diving Sean Moore out in left field to put the Bears up 3-0.
T7 | Kubo held the Bears' offense largely in check during the second through sixth innings before Central Arkansas got to the senior right-hander once again in the seventh. Kubo started the frame with a five-pitch walk before watching Josh Ragan sting an 0-1 pitch down the left field line for a double that put runners on second and third. That double was the end of Kubo's day and freshman left-hander Jaxon Covington took over from there. After inducing a flyout, Covington intentionally walked Beau Orlando to get to Wiley who continued to swing a hot bat. After a wild pitch helped UCA take a 4-0 lead, Wiley punched a two-run double to left field that put the Bears up 6-0.
T8 | A four-hit, five run inning helped the Bears secure their run-rule victory. Following a leadoff single and an out, Jay Anderson lined an RBI double down the right field line to push the Bears' lead to 7-0. Joseph Sgambelluri headed out to the hill after that and hit the first batter he faced, setting the table for Tyler Smith who launched a two-run double to the gap in left-center that made matters 9-0. Following an RBI single by Orlando that upped the Bears' lead to 10-0, a passed ball allowed the 11th and final Central Arkansas run to come around before the inning came to an end.
AT THE DISH
• The vast majority of the Bears' damage was done by Wiley who went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and five RBI. He was one of four Central Arkansas players who enjoyed multi-hit games with Anderson and Smith also coming up with two hits apiece. Anderson and Smith combined to drive in three runs and scored two apiece.
• The only Central Arkansas player to come up with three hits was Orlando who finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
• No SFA player reached base more than one time and six players including Nick Daley, Jake Georgiades, Jordan Monacy, Sean Moore, Brandon Uhse and Manny Vasquez each came up with a single in the loss.
ON THE HILL
• Making only his second start of the 2019 season, Central Arkansas' right-hander Gavin Stone fired a complete-game shutout, needing only 100 pitches to navigate his way through eight innings of action.
• Stone struck out six without allowing a walk. The righty gave up all six of the 'Jacks' hits.
• Despite striking out a game-high six batters, Kubo (3-4) got tagged with the loss in his Southland Conference Tournament debut. The senior issued five walks and six hits which turned into five earned runs.
• Jaxon Covington gave up three runs on three hits and a walk in 1 1/3 innings of relief while Joseph Sgambelluri let in three runs - two of which were earned - in two-thirds of an inning.
ON DECK
• Friday morning at 9:00 a.m., the 'Jacks face a win-or-go-home situation when they tangle with third-seeded Southeastern Louisiana for the second time in three days. The Southland Conference Tournament elimination game will be broadcast nationwide on ESPN+ and the ESPN app.
