High school senior from Troup, Texas, is SFA’s first signee of 2019 class
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Head coach Trey Schroeder announced the addition of Troup, Texas, native Jake Smelser to the SFA men's golf team Thursday afternoon following the incoming freshman's signed National Letter of Intent Wednesday. A three-time individual tournament championship, Smelser is the Lumberjacks' first signee of their 2019 class.
SFA welcomed highly-ranked Bogotá, Colombia, native Eldrick Juzga Pinto to the program this spring as the Lumberjacks' first signee of the 2019 calendar year.
One of east Texas' top golfers, Smelser comes to Texas' oldest town after a successful four-year prep career at Troup High School. As a freshman in 2015-16, Smelser was named first-team all-district and placed on the Region III-3A All-Region Second Team before garnering all-state honorable mention accolades. In his first year of varsity golf, Smelser led the Tigers to both a district and regional championship and a state runner-up finish. In 2016-17 as a sophomore, Smelser claimed first-team all-district honors once again en route to picking up Region II-3A All-Region First Team and Texas Class 3A All-State First Team plaudits. He helped lead Troup to the Texas Class 3A state title after the Tigers won district and regional championships for the second-straight season.
For the second consecutive year, Smelser was named to the Class 3A All-State First Team and the Region II-3A All-Region First Team as a junior following the 2017-18 season, in addition to claiming his third-straight first-team all-district award. Smelser led Troup to its third consecutive district and regional championship and a second Class 3A state runner-up finish in three years.
Nearing the end of his senior campaign in 2018-19, Smelser has already posted three first-place finishes individually throughout the year as Troup's No. 1 golfer and co-captain. He took home individual runner-up honors at the regional tournament and led the Tigers to their fourth-straight district championship as Troup placed second at regionals. On May 20, Smelser will attempt to lead the Tigers to their second Class 3A state title in four years at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) state championship held at the Grey Rock Golf Club in Austin.
The son of Mandy and Mark Smelser, Jake intends on studying pre-engineering at SFA.
