'Jacks fall in regular season finale to New Orleans
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - In its regular season finale, the SFA baseball team suffered a 10-1 Southland Conference setback to New Orleans, but didn't let that dampen its spirits too much on senior day.
The careers of SFA's 11 seniors - Cody Adams, Nick Daley, Jesus Gamez, Jake Georgiades, Tony Grabowske, Austin Hearn, Jarrod Huber, Trayson, Kubo, Antonio Lima, Tyler Starks and Manny Vasquez - did not come to end but that group did play its final game at Jaycees Field Saturday afternoon and were honored for their contributions to SFA baseball with pre-game and post-game ceremonies.
SCORING SUMMARY
T2 | Some healthy cuts by the Privateers coupled with a strong breeze blowing out to left helped the visitors put a three-spot on the board. Gaige Howard started New Orleans' four-hit frame with a single past the glove of Antonio Lima at second base before Tresten Kennard turned on an 0-2 offering from Jacob Stobart and launched a two-run homer off the foul pole in left field. Up 2-0 the Privateers padded their lead with a couple more extra-base hits, the first of which was a one-out double off the bat of Robert Fabelo. With two down, Darren Willis upped New Orleans' lead to 3-0 with an RBI double before a pop-up ended the frame.
T6 | SFA was able to keep the Privateers' lead at three runs until the sixth when the visitors put another three-spot on the board. Kennard started the frame with a single before Fabelo struck for another double. Freshman left-hander Jaxon Covington then issued a six-pitch walk to Scott Crabtree to load the bases for Collin Morrill who made matters 5-0 with a two-run double over the head of Nick Daley in center field. Salo Iza upped New Orleans' edge to 6-0 by finishing the visitors' three-run frame with a sacrifice fly.
T7 | Luther Woullard greeted SFA reliever Joseph Sgambelluri with a solo home run to start the seventh which increased the Privateers' lead to 7-0.
T8 | Seth Campbell pitched the eighth for the 'Jacks and was welcomed with a double off the bat of Darren Willis. The junior kept the damage to a minimum in the frame, however, letting up just one run on an RBI groundout by Morrill.
B8 | SFA got on the board in the home half of the eighth when Sean Moore started the frame with a leadoff double. That two-bagger represented the 'Jacks' lone extra-base hit of the afternoon and after moving to third on a groundout Moore came home when Jordan Monacy shot a laser back up the middle for an RBI single.
T9 | New Orleans put the finishing touches on its 10-run afternoon when Fabelo launched a two-run home run off of SFA reliever Austin Hearn in the ninth.
