‘Jacks Finish with Third-Lowest Score of Season at Wyoming Cowboy Classic

Men’s golf cards a 1-over 865, Steven Fabik posts first top-10 finish of 2018-19 with career-low 7-under 209
CHANDLER, Ariz. – Wrapping up play after competing in Arizona for the first time in program history, the SFA men's golf team finished with its third-lowest 54-hole score of 2018-19 Tuesday afternoon at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Chandler, Arizona. The Lumberjacks completed the tournament with a 1-over 865, shooting a 7-over 295 on the final 18 holes of play at the Whirlwind Golf Club at Wild Horse Pass to finish eighth among a highly-competitive 20-team field that included four of the nation's top 80 teams according to the latest Golfstat rankings.
Sophomore Steven Fabik stood out, posting his first top-10 finish of the season with his best tournament to date. Registering a career-low score of 7-under 209 across the three rounds, Fabik turned in an even-par 72 Tuesday to tie for sixth among 119 total golfers.
Fabik came within six shots of the individual crown, which was claimed by UCLA's Cole Madey (13-under 203) following a playoff. Tournament host Wyoming's John Murdock (13-under 203) tied for first, while Northern Colorado's Joshua Matz and Grand Canyon's Jake Chanen tied for third with two-day scores of 9-under 207.
Coming off his first top-place finish of his career, senior Angelo Leyvani earned his second-straight top-25 placement by tying for 25th. He shot a 2-under 70 in Tuesday's final round on the par-72, 7,218-yard course to hold a 54-hole total of 2-under 214. Fellow senior Jake Hendrix tied for 60th with a cumulative score of 5-over 221 as freshman Johannes Gudmundsson tied for 65th with a 6-over 222.
Competing as an individual, sophomore Justin Benson (10-over 226) improved his score by three strokes between the second and third rounds, carding a 2-over 74 in round three and tying for 90th. Freshman Alec Brown rounded out SFA's lineup with a two-day tally of 20-over 236.
Ranked 39th nationally, UCLA took home the title with a 54-hole score of 23-over 841 as No. 77 Cal State Fullerton claimed runner-up honors with a 16-under 848. Grand Canyon (14-under 850) placed third nine strokes off the lead.
The Wyoming Cowboy Classic wraps up the Lumberjacks' 2018-19 regular season with SFA now turning its attention to postseason action.
