‘Jacks Shoot Lowest Two-Round Score of Season Monday at Wyoming Cowboy Classic

Steven Fabik sits just one stroke off lead among 119-player tournament field, SFA improves score by 10 strokes between first and second rounds
CHANDLER, Ariz. – Competing in the state of Arizona for the first time in program history, the SFA men's golf team seemed to be playing right at home Monday as the Lumberjacks carded their lowest two-round score of 2018-19. SFA shot a 6-under 570 across the opening two rounds of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic at the Whirlwind Golf Club at Wild Horse Pass in Chandler, Arizona.
Improving their score by 10 strokes between the first and second rounds, the 'Jacks are tied for sixth among a highly-competitive 20-team field that features four of the nation's top 80 teams according to the latest Golfstat rankings. After recording a 2-over 290 on the first 18 holes of play Monday morning, SFA turned in its second-lowest round of the season with an 8-under 280 in the day's second round.
The 'Jacks sit 12 strokes off the lead, which is held by 39th-ranked UCLA (18-under 558), and are 10 strokes from second place holder and 77th-ranked Cal State Fullerton (16-under 560). Grand Canyon is in third place with a 14-under 562.
Sophomore Steven Fabik is only one stroke off the lead following 36 holes of play, owning a 7-under 137 after tying his single-round career low of 2-under 70 in the opening round. He set a career best on the second 18 holes, shooting a 5-under 67 to sit tied for third among 119 total golfers. UCLA's Cole Madey and Wyoming's John Murdock are tied atop the individual leaderboard with scores of 8-under 136, while Fabik joins three other competitors tied for third.
Freshman Johannes Gudmundsson posted scores of 1-over 73 and 2-under 70 Monday on the par-72, 7,218-yard course to stand tied for 32nd with a 36-hole tally of 1-under 143. Senior Angelo Leyvani carded back-to-back rounds right at even-par 72 and is tied for 40th at even-par 144, while fellow senior Jake Hendrix improved upon his first round score by four strokes with a 1-under 71 on the second 18 holes of play to hold a 2-over 146 tied for 56th.
Competing as an individual, sophomore Justin Benson is tied for 92nd with an 8-over 152 as freshman Alec Brown (14-over 158) is tied for 115th.
The two-day, 54-hole tournament will conclude Tuesday morning with the third and final round. Tuesday's last 18 holes of play will get underway at 9:30 a.m. CST with a shotgun start.
Paired with UC Davis, UT Arlington and tournament host Wyoming for round three, SFA will tee off of holes four through six as Benson will get started off of hole 16 at 9:39 a.m. CST with other individual competitors from Denver, UT Arlington and Colorado. Gudmundsson and Fabik will both begin on hole four with Fabik teeing off at 9:39 a.m. Leyvani will begin from hole five, while both Brown and Hendrix will start on hole six with Hendrix teeing off at 9:39 a.m.
