'Jacks' ninth-inning rally falls short against Golden Lions
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Down by four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning the SFA baseball team staged a comeback bid by notching three of its nine hits in the final frame but the 'Jacks ultimately came up short in a 6-4 non-conference setback to Arkansas-Pine Bluff Wednesday evening at Jaycees Field.
SFA scored two runs in the home half of the third to take its only lead of the game before the Golden Lions answered with five consecutive runs in the fourth through seventh frames to go ahead for good.
SCORING SUMMARY
T1 | The first of SFA starter Tony Grabowske's three hits in his three-inning outing turned into the Golden Lions' first run of the game. Nick Kreutzer drilled a one-out single to left center before moving to second on a single off the bat of Jarficur Parker and third on a flyout. Larry Sims' two-out single to center field pushed Kreutzer home and handed Arkansas-Pine Bluff a 1-0 lead.
B3 | SFA mounted a rally right from the first pitch in the third. Brandon Uhse started the frame with a single up the middle before Sean Moore drove the freshman in by slinging an RBI double down the left field line. With the game deadlocked at one, Josh Campbell handed the home team its first lead of the game by smacking the first pitch he saw from Arkansas-Pine Bluff starter Race Tittle into left field. The junior's RBI double drove Moore in and put the 'Jacks up 2-1.
T4 | Two-out hitting was the key to the Golden Lions' success in the fourth. Bryce Roesch drew a four-pitch walk from SFA relief arm Cully Mangus with two down which set the table for Tywan Mackey, Jr., who roped an RBI double to the gap in left-center to tie things at two apiece. Arkansas-Pine Bluff went back on top when Justin Robinson drove a 1-0 offering from Mangus back up the middle to score Mackey.
T6 | A two-out, two-run double off the bat of Kreutzer extended the Golden Lions' lead to 5-2. That hit was Arkansas-Pine Bluff's lone base knock of the frame as a walk and an SFA error elongated the inning.
T7 | Lumberjack relief pitcher Austin Roth surrendered a leadoff single to Ricardo Sanchez who stole second to get into scoring position. Sims did the rest from there, driving in his second and final run of the ballgame with an RBI single past a diving Jordan Monacy at first.
B9 | Needing some offense in a bad way, the 'Jacks were finally able to get some and make things interesting. Kyle Cullen led off the frame with a single before Uhse put the sophomore in scoring position with a double that put the home team in business. From there, Jordan O'Guinn took over for Tittle and promptly tossed a wild pitch that allowed Cullen to scamper home from third and make it a three-run ball game. With two outs, Manny Vasquez delivered an RBI double to plate Uhse, but Josh Campbell struck out on four pitches to end the game.

• Moore and Uhse notched two hits apiece and combined to score three of the 'Jacks' four runs in the midweek affair. SFA's only other multi-hit performer was Vasquez who finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.

• SFA left 11 men on base while the Golden Lions stranded 10 runners on the base paths.
ON THE HILL

• Joseph Sgambelluri worked 1 2/3 innings and was charged with a pair of unearned runs to go along with his team-high two strikeouts.
• Seth Campbell (1 1/3 innings pitched) and Jeremy Rodriguez (one inning pitched) each registered a strikeout and did not allow a baserunner in their relief outings.
• Tittle (1-0) worked eight innings and struck out eight to secure his first win of the season. The freshman gave up four runs on eight hits, four walks and two hit by pitch.
• O'Guinn struck out a trio of batters to latch onto his first save of the season.
ON DECK
• For the first time in program history, the 'Jacks head west to the state of California. While there, they are set to duke it out with one of the best teams in collegiate baseball when SFA collides with 17th-ranked UC Santa Barbara in a three-game series.
