SFA jumps four spots on the leaderboard to post third-straight top-three finish at league championship, cards tournament-low 1-under 287 on final 18 holes
McKINNEY, Texas – Shooting the lowest score of any round on the final 18 holes of play, the SFA men's golf team made a ferocious comeback at the 2019 Southland Conference Men's Golf Championship in McKinney, Texas, Tuesday. The Lumberjacks carded a championship-low 1-under 287 on the challenging Stonebridge Ranch Country Club's Dye Course in Tuesday afternoon's third round to secure their third consecutive top-three finish at the league championship.
With a 100 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms Tuesday night and Wednesday, tournament officials were forced to move round three to Tuesday as the championship's final 36 holes took place on day two. SFA used the schedule adjustment to its advantage and shot the best round of the tournament in wet and rainy conditions, closing out the two-day, 54-hole championship with a three-round score of 45-over 909.
Both of the Lumberjacks' seniors, Jake Hendrix and Angelo Leyvani, closed out their SFA careers with top-15 finishes as Hendrix medaled with a third place showing. Entering day two of play tied for seventh among the championship's 55-player field, Hendrix rose to third after carding scores at even-par 72 and 1-under 71 and posting a three-round total of 4-over 220. He came seven strokes from individual title holder Noah Steele of Sam Houston State, who finished with a 3-under 213. Hendrix completed the tournament only four strokes from second place finisher Blake Elliott of McNeese (even-par 216).
Tying for 15th, Leyvani shot a 2-over 74 in Tuesday's final round and claimed a 12-over 228 for the tournament. The Lumberjacks' upperclassmen were not the SFA players to shine during Tuesday's second and third rounds as freshman Johannes Gudmundsson erased 11 strokes between round two and round three. He carded his second-lowest single round score of his young Lumberjack career in the third round with a 3-under 69, the lowest score turned in on the final 18 holes of play, and tied for 18th with a final tally of 13-over 229.
Sophomore Steven Fabik improved his score each round of the championship, chiseling six strokes off his total in round three with a 1-over 73 and tying for 27th with an 18-over 234. Freshman Isiah Henderson rounded out SFA's golfers by shooting a 28-over 244 across the three rounds and finishing 45th.
The Bearkats, who entered the tournament as the top seed, claimed their second-straight Southland title by carding a 25-over 889 for the 54 holes. Second-seeded Lamar took home runner-up honors with a 32-over 896 over the two days on the par-72, 7,219-yard course.
The completion of the 2019 Southland Championship wraps up the Lumberjacks' 2018-19 campaign with SFA posting a total of three top-three finishes.
