SFA tied for seventh following opening round of Southland’s championship tournament, set for 36 holes of play Tuesday
McKINNEY, Texas – Enduring windy and challenging course conditions Monday, the SFA men's golf team fought through the first round of the 2019 Southland Conference Men's Golf Championship and sits just 13 strokes off the lead. The Lumberjacks, who entered the day as the No. 4 seed, sit ahead of New Orleans, Nicholls and Central Arkansas and are tied with the University of the Incarnate Word after shooting a 26-over 314 on the opening 18 holes at the Stonebridge Ranch Country Club Dye Course in McKinney, Texas.
A pair of SFA golfers rank among the top 20 on the individual leaderboard with senior Angelo Leyvani tied for sixth among the 55-player championship field. Leyvani carded a 3-over 75 in round one and is only four strokes from Southeastern Louisiana's Joris Eltin, who owns the lead with a 1-under 71. Abilene Christian's Alex Clouse and Sam Houston State's Noah Steele are tied for second after recording an even-par 72 Monday.
Fellow senior Jake Hendrix is tied for 19th after registering a 5-over 77 on the opening 18 holes of play as freshman Johannes Gudmundsson sits tied for 27th with an 8-over 80. Both freshman Isiah Henderson and sophomore Steven Fabik posted a 10-over 82 in round one and are tied for 37th.
Second-seeded Lamar owns the top spot after shooting a 13-over 301 on the par-72, 7,219-yard course, while top-seeded and defending Southland champion Sam Houston State and 10th-seeded Southeastern Louisiana are tied for second following first-round scores of 17-over 305. No team among the championship's 11-team field cracked 300 Monday on one of the most difficult golf courses in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
The 54-hole Southland Men's Golf Championship will resume Tuesday morning, however, with an adjustment to the schedule due to forecasted heavy rain Wednesday and a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms Tuesday night. The final two rounds of thirty-six holes will be played Tuesday with round two beginning at 7 a.m. with a double-tee start off of holes one and 10. Round three will take place in the afternoon, also with a double-tee start.
The 'Jacks are paired with seventh-seeded Incarnate Word and 11th-seeded New Orleans for Tuesday's 36 holes of play and will tee off of hole one starting at 7:50 a.m. Henderson will begin right at 7:50 a.m., followed by Fabik teeing off at 7:59 a.m., Gudmundsson at 8:08 a.m., Hendrix at 8:17 a.m. and Leyvani at 8:26 a.m.
