NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Fresh off a strong day of competition at the Leon Johnson NSU Invitational last Friday, the SFA Track and Field team looks to continue that momentum this weekend as they compete in three different meets. While the bulk of the team, including sprinters and field athletes, travels to Waco, Texas for the Michael Johnson Invitational, the distance unit heads westward to California for the Mt. Sac Relays and Brian Clay Invitational.
The two-day Michael Johnson Invitational takes place inside the Clyde Hart Track and Field Stadium, a 5,000 seat facility which has hosted the Michael Johnson Invitational for four seasons prior to 2019. Competition will open on Friday at noon with some of the field events and culminating with the 5000m run for both the men and women. A full schedule of events for that meet is listed above.
The 61st annual Mt. Sac Relays will be run on the campus of El Camino College in Torrance, California, the hometown of famous Olympic runner and WWII bomber pilot Louis Zamperini, AKA the "Torrance Tornado". Brittany Innis, Taryn Surratt and Awet Beraki will each run at the Mt. Sac Relays, while LaSean Davis and Kelsey Ramirez will run at the Bryan Clay Invitational in nearby Azusa, CA.
Having made a last minute switch from a two-day meet at Louisiana-Monroe to the NSU Leon Johnson Invitational, the SFA Track and Field team dodged inclement weather and was able to have a strong meet in Natchitoches, bringing home 11 event wins. With just two weekends of competition left before the Southland Conference Outdoor Championship in the first week of May, the 'Jacks are well represented among the Southland's top eight marks in many events.
Heading into the weekend, the Ladyjacks are ranked sixth in the South Central Regional rankings behind only Arkansas, Texas A&M, Texas, LSU and Baylor, three of whom are ranked in the top five nationally. The men are ranked 13th in the region.
