Sophomore represents national champion Ladyjacks at USBC’s collegiate individual national tournament as SFA remains in Dayton following national title run
DAYTON, Ohio – Fresh off of helping to lead the SFA bowling team to its second NCAA national championship in the last four years, sophomore Sarah Gill is competing for an individual national title at the United States Bowling Congress' (USBC) 2019 Intercollegiate Singles Championships (ISC) in Dayton, Ohio. A native of Attleboro, Massachusetts (Attleboro HS), Gill qualified for the 24-bowler individual national championship event back in March at the ISC Smyrna sectional in Smyrna, Tennessee, by placing fifth among 165 total bowlers.
Tuesday morning at the Poelking Lanes South, Gill was seeded ninth among the championship's 24 competitors for the ISC's bracket match play following six games of qualifying to determine seeding. Gill claimed 1,206 total pins across the six games, rolling three consecutive 200-pin games to close out the qualifying and notching a 222 in game four.
Taking on 24th-seeded Megan Hess of St. Ambrose University in the first round of the ISC bracket Tuesday afternoon, Gill claimed a 22-pin match victory. She out-bowled Hess 547-525 across the match's three games to advance to the ISC second round, which will be played Wednesday morning at 6:30 a.m. CST.
Gill is matched up with eighth-seeded Karsyn Lukosius of Fairleigh Dickinson for round two of single-elimination match play. The match will take place on lanes 15 and 16 inside Poelking Lanes South and will be streamed live via BowlTV.com. A subscription is required.
With a second round match win, Gill would advance to the 2019 ISC quarterfinals where she would take on either top-seeded Averi Brown of Arkansas State or No. 16 seed Bailey Delrose of Maryville University. The ISC's quarterfinals will be played Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. CST with the semifinals and final taking place Saturday, April 20 beginning at 2:15 p.m. CST. The one-game semifinals and championship final will both be televised on tape delay on CBS Sports Network next Tuesday, April 23 at 10 p.m. CST.
Four-time first-team All-American Stephanie Schwartz ('18) represented the Ladyjacks the previous three years at the ISC and took home last year's title.
NCAA national champion SFA will also be competing this week as a team at the USBC's 2019 Intercollegiate Team Championships (ITC), where they will vie for their second national title in eight days. In March, the Ladyjacks secured their eighth-straight appearance at the USBC's collegiate national championship tournament after SFA captured runner-up honors at the ITC Smyrna sectional in Tennessee.
Held Thursday-Saturday, April 18-20 also at the Poelking Lanes South in Dayton, the ITC brings together the top 16 women's and top 16 men's teams in the country to compete for national titles. Outside of the NCAA Bowling Championship, the USBC's ITC is the pinnacle event of the collegiate bowling season.
