Seniors Erica Lautensack and Jamee Jorgensen sit among tournament field’s top 10
MAGNOLIA, Texas – Through the first 18 holes of play at the 2019 Southland Conference Women's Golf Championship in Magnolia, Texas, the SFA women's golf team sits in fifth place and just three strokes behind third place after carding a 17-over 305 Monday at the High Meadow Ranch Golf Club. The Ladyjacks, who are near middle of the pack in the league's eight-team tournament field, sit ahead of seventh-seeded McNeese, No. 5 seed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and sixth-seeded the University of the Incarnate Word after being tabbed as the No. 8 seed.
Both of SFA's seniors, Erica Lautensack and Jamee Jorgensen, are among the top 10 following round one. Lautensack shot a 1-over 73 on the par-72, 6,258-yard course Monday and is tied for fourth just three strokes off the lead, which is held by Lamar's Laura Pasalodos Barcelo at 2-under 70. She is only one stroke from Sam Houston State's Hanna Alberto (1-under 71) and two strokes off the Bearkats' Kenlie Barrett (even-par 72), who are currently in second and third place, respectively.
Jorgensen sits just one stroke back from Lautensack tied for seventh after carding a 2-over 74 on the opening 18 holes. Sophomore Kelly Yang is tied for 24th on the individual leaderboard with a first round score of 6-over 78, while junior Alexandra Batista is tied for 30th with an opening round of 8-over 80. Junior Paola Cortes rounded out the Ladyjacks Monday, shooting a 14-over 86 on the first 18 holes of the conference championship.
SFA will look to make up 10 strokes Tuesday in round two as top-seeded Sam Houston State and two-time defending tournament champion and No. 2 seed Houston Baptist are tied atop the team standings after each carded a 7-over 295 for round one. Fourth-seeded Central Arkansas is in third place after scoring a 9-over 297 Monday.
The three-day, 54-hole championship event will continue Tuesday morning with round two's tee times beginning at 8 a.m. The Ladyjacks are paired with McNeese once again for Tuesday's second round and will tee off second beginning at 8:45 a.m. Cortes will get things started for SFA right at 8:45 a.m. from hole one, while Batista will tee off at 8:54 a.m., Yang at 9:03 a.m., Jorgensen at 9:12 a.m. and Lautensack at 9:21 a.m.
