Pair of seniors tabbed All-American by National Tenpin Coaches Association, Dakotah Hazlewood named to first team
BEACHWOOD, Ohio – A year after senior Stephanie Schwartz ('18) became the first NCAA Division I bowler to be named First-Team All-American for four-straight years, a pair of seniors represented the SFA bowling team well at the 2019 National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) annual awards banquet Wednesday night in Beachwood, Ohio. Dakotah Hazlewood and Paige Beeney both collected All-American accolades as Hazlewood became the Ladyjacks' fifth-straight All-American First Team selection and Beeney garnered honorable mention acclaim.
A native of Capron, Illinois (Rockford Luthern HS), Hazlewood served as SFA's lynchpin bowler throughout most of the 2018-19 season en route to earning her first All-American recognition. She ranked fourth nationally in overall and traditional average, sixth in the Player Composite Index and fifth in strikes, Baker average and first-ball 9 or strike.
Claiming All-Southland Bowling League First Team honors, Hazlewood made three all-tournament teams throughout the season and owned a 20.45 per frame average in all matches bowled to rank second in the league in that category. Holding a team-best 205.5 game score average in 46 individual games, Hazlewood knocked down 9,453 total pins in traditional team matches and rolled 28 200-pin games. Helping the Ladyjacks to their first tournament title since 2016 at the Kutztown Invitational in Limerick, Pennsylvania, Hazlewood averaged a 242.4 score in five traditional team games and picked up MVP honors as the top bowler among 182 total competitors. Tallying a tournament-best pinfall total of 1,212, Hazlewood posted a career-high game of 274 in SFA's 1,043-939 win over tournament host and 25th-ranked Kutztown. Bowling five-straight games with at least a 214 score at the Kutztown Invitational, her 242.4 average was the highest by a Ladyjack bowler in five traditional games since Schwartz averaged a 245.6 at the 2017 Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational.
Beeney, a native of Salado, Texas (Georgetown HS), was SFA's second-best bowler throughout 2018-19, averaging a 198.83 game score in a team-high 52 individual games. Just like Hazlewood, Beeney was placed on three all-tournament teams throughout 2018-19 and was tabbed All-Southland Bowling League honorable mention. She knocked down 10,339 total pins in traditional team matches and bowled 23 games at or above 200, ranking 10th in the Southland Bowling League with a 19.84 per frame average in all matches she saw action in.
At the Mid-Winter Invitational in Jonesboro, Arkansas, Beeney garnered all-tournament team honors after finishing second in the individual standings among 128 total bowlers. She came a mere three pins shy of claiming the individual crown by knocking down 1,086 total pins in the five traditional team games and averaging a game score of 217.2. In the Ladyjacks' 1,050-902 match win over then second-ranked Nebraska, Beeney rolled a career-best game of 267 and turned in four-straight 200-pin games during traditional team match play. Beeney helped lead SFA to its second tournament title of the season and first undefeated tournament in program history at the Sunshine State Winter Classic in Orlando, Florida, grabbing MVP accolades and earning a spot on the all-tournament team. She finished third among 93 total bowlers with a 212 game average in five traditional team games and knocked down 1,060 total pins. Rolling a team-best 256 to will the Ladyjacks to a 1,090-1,082 victory over then ninth-ranked Tulane, Beeney assisted SFA to an improbable 4-3 comeback win over third-ranked and top-seeded Nebraska in the championship match.
Vanderbilt's Maria Bulanova and McKendree University's Breanna Clemmer were selected for top NTCA honors on the eve of the 2019 NCAA Bowling Championship with Bulanova being named the Division I Player of the Year and Clemmer the Division II/III Player of the Year. Vanderbilt's John Williamson was tabbed the Division I Coach of the Year for the second time, while McKendree's Shannon O'Keefe repeated as Division II/III Coach of the Year.
