Men’s Golf in Third Place Following Opening Two Rounds of Bearkat Invitational

‘Jacks sit ahead of 12 teams, card second-lowest first round score with two golfers just three strokes off lead
MONTGOMERY, Texas – The SFA men's golf team turned in the second-lowest score in the opening round of the Huntsville Toyota Bearkat Invitational at the Walden on Lake Conroe Golf Club in Montgomery, Texas, Monday morning. The Lumberjacks carded a 3-under 285 on the opening 18 holes of play and sit in third place among a 15-team tournament field with a 36-hole total of 5-over 581.
With the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley leading the two-day, 54-hole tournament (9-over 567), SFA is just four strokes from second place holder and host Sam Houston State (1-over 577).
A pair of Lumberjack golfers own two of the top three scores through two rounds as seniors Angelo Leyvani and Jake Hendrix are tied for fifth among 80 total competitors after carding a 36-hole score of 3-under 141. Both shot a 3-under 69 in the opening round before turning in an even-par on the second 18 holes of play Monday afternoon. Leyvani and Hendrix are just three strokes off the lead, which is held by Sam Houston State's William Holcomb and Baylor individual golfer Brandon Hoff at 6-under 138. UT Rio Grande Valley's Alvaro Hernandez and Pedro Lamadrid are tied for third, each owning a two-round tally of 4-under 140.
Sophomore Steven Fabik shot a 1-under 71 on the par-72, 6,756-yard course Monday morning and is tied for 27th with a 5-over 149. Freshman Alec Brown is tied for 43rd with a two-round score of 8-over 152, while fellow freshman Isiah Henderson is tied for 67th at 15-over 159.
The Bearkat Invitational will conclude Tuesday morning with a tournament champion to be crowned following the third and final round, which is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. SFA is paired with UT Rio Grande Valley and Sam Houston State for Tuesday's final 18 holes of play and will tee off from holes one through three. Leyvani and Hendrix will begin on hole one as Fabik will start on hole two and Henderson and Brown off of hole three.
