NACOGDOCHES, Texas – With just a week remaining in the Southland Conference regular season schedule, the SFA women's basketball team has a great opportunity to clinch either the one or two seed in the Southland Conference Tournament later this month. To do so, the Ladyjacks (23-5, 14-2) will need one more victory, with the first opportunity presenting itself on Wednesday against the Wildcats of Abilene Christian (19-8 overall, 12-4 Southland) inside William R. Johnson Coliseum.
The Ladyjacks will look to complete the regular season series sweep over ACU in a matchup that will be streamed on ESPN+. Third-year man Bobby Mauro's eloquent delivery of all the game's action will accompany the stream, as well as being available on the airwaves via Q107.7 FM in the Nacogdoches area and nationwide via the TuneIn App.
SFA has won three straight games against ACU entering Wednesday's matchup, including a 71-55 defeat of the Wildcats in Abilene earlier this season. In that game, a fourth-quarter surge from the Ladyjacks kept them perfect in conference play and continued what would end up being a 13-game winning streak. Since then, both teams have been solid, with SFA posting an 8-2 record and the Wildcats going 7-3 in games since.
ACU is led by a very balanced scoring attack, as four players average double-figures. Dominique Golightly leads the team with 14.4 points per game, while Breanna Wright (13.2), Sara Williamson (12.4) and Lexie Ducat (11.1) all average double digits as well. All four of those players are averaging higher totals in Southland play this season, and the Wildcats average 73.3 points per game in conference play, fourth-best in the SLC.
Looking to hold that Wildcats offense in check is SFA's formidable defense, which allows a league-low 54.0 points per game on 33 percent shooting. The task gets tougher inside Wednesday's venue, as opponents have averaged just 51.5 points per game against SFA inside William R. Johnson Coliseum on a paltry 32 percent shooting. SFA has allowed just two opponents to score 60 or more points against them at home this season, and held six teams under 50 points as well.
Playing in their final two home games, seniors Chanell Hayes and Imani Johnson will look to get the team back on track after Saturday's setback at Lamar. Still alive in the hunt for a regular season title, the 'Jacks have plenty to play for in that regard as well as preferred tournament seeding. Owning the top marks in the conference in field goal percentage (49.4) and three-point percentage (39.1), the Ladyjacks have posted some gaudy offensive numbers at home, averaging 9.1 made three-pointers per contest on a 37 percent clip inside "the Sawmill".
TIP-OFF TIDBITS
• SFA is 15-0 in home games this season and 25-4 in games played on Wednesdays under Mark Kellogg during the same span.
• The Ladyjacks have now held 19 opponents under 60 points this season, and haven't given up more than 68 points to a conference opponent.
• SFA has carved out an impressive +174 scoring margin in the third quarter at home, and an overall scoring margin of +379.
• The 'Jacks' scoring margin of 14.8 points per game this season ranks 19thin the nation. At home, that scoring margin balloons to 25.3 points per game.
• Chanell Hayes continues to climb up SFA's top-scoring list and made three-pointers, needing just two more treys to move into seventh all-time.
