Stoner brings 20 years of strength and conditioning coaching experience to Texas’ oldest town
NACOGDOCHES – Director of athletics Ryan Ivey and the SFA athletic department has announced Josh Stoner as the Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks' director of sports performance. Hired in January, Stoner will oversee the development of a comprehensive and integrated sports performance department for all SFA student-athletes, while also being responsible for football strength and conditioning.
"I would like to thank director of athletics Ryan Ivey for allowing me the opportunity to lead sports performance," coach Stoner commented. "The vision for SFA to be the leading mid-major athletic department in the nation is especially exciting to me."
Stoner comes to SFA from Texas A&M-Commerce where he held a similar position from June 2016 to December 2018, serving as senior director of sports performance. He was responsible for football and softball as well as overseeing all sports performance for Lion athletics. While in Commerce, Stoner helped the Lions football program capture the 2017 NCAA Division II national title.
"The opportunity to continue working with head football coach Colby Carthel after three seasons at A&M-Commerce is great," continued coach Stoner. "I know he's a great leader and the staff will be people of high character. The standards will be high on and off the field. They will be able to evaluate talent, recruit talent, and field a team we'll all be proud of through great coaching."
"I'm extremely excited to be a part of the Lumberjack and Ladyjack athletics family," added coach Stoner. "I'm excited to help SFA continue the tradition of Southland Conference championships and push to new levels of postseason and national championship successes. My goal is to use my experiences and knowledge to be a leader in all we do and bring the best experience to our student-athletes."
Previous to A&M-Commerce, Stoner was at the Southeastern Conference's University of Missouri in his second stint with the program from January 2014 to December 2015 as the director of football strength and conditioning. He was responsible for football programming and developing, in addition to maintaining a student-athlete monitoring program with various technologies.
"Josh Stoner has proven to be one of the best in the business, at any level, and we're thrilled to have him join our Lumberjack family," coach Carthel said about Stoner's hiring. "He's so much more than just a strength coach and will have a tremendous impact on all the student-athletes here at SFA. Coach Stoner will play a key role in the championships we win here, not just in football, but in all sports across the athletic department."
Stoner served as director of speed, strength and conditioning at Coastal Carolina University from February 2012 to January 2014. His primary role was oversight of all speed, strength and conditioning for Chanticleer athletics, while working specifically with the football program. Stoner also administered the nutritional supplementation program for athletics.
Prior to Coastal Carolina University, Stoner was at the then Big 12 Conference's Missouri from May 2004 to February 2012. During his first stint in Columbia, Missouri, he worked with multiple teams including softball, track & field, and baseball, as well as serving as the first assistant for football athletic performance. His additional duties were to coordinate the internship program, organize the Mizzou Performance Coaches Clinic and the Mizzou Performance Club, which helped raise funds for athletic performance needs.
Stoner served as the assistant director of strength and conditioning at the University of Tulsa from March 2002 to May 2004. He was responsible for assisting with the player development program for football as well as for women's basketball, men's soccer, men's tennis, women's tennis and the cross country/track and field programs. He was also a graduate assistant at Southern Miss from January 2000 to December 2001. He assisted with player development for football and men's basketball as well as directing the programs for women's soccer, volleyball and softball.
Stoner also served as the strength and conditioning coach at his alma mater Centenary College of Louisiana in 1999, where he was responsible for all of its athletic teams.
In April 2014, Stoner was recognized as a Master Strength and Conditioning Coach by the Collegiate Strength & Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCa). The MSCC is the highest honor that can be achieved as a strength and conditioning coach. It represents professionalism, knowledge, experience, expertise, as well as longevity in the field.
He is the co-author of the book titled Complete Conditioning for Football which was published in 2012 by Human Kinetics and was also a contributor to the book Winning Kids with Sport by Dr. Rick McGuire, also published in 2012 by Championship Productions.
Stoner received his undergraduate degree in 1999 with a double major in applied science and health and exercise science from Centenary College of Louisiana. He completed his master's degree in exercise science at Southern Miss in 2001. Stoner holds certifications from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and the CSCCa.
