Women’s Golf Shoots Near-Record Low in Opening Round of Red Rocks Invitational

Ladyjacks come within one stroke of program record in Arizona, card 9-over 293 in first round

CORNVILLE, Ariz. – On the opening 18 holes of play at the Agave Highlands Golf Course in Cornville, Arizona, the SFA women's golf team nearly tied a two-and-a-half-year program record by shooting a 9-over 293 in the first round of Northern Arizona's Red Rocks Invitational. The Ladyjacks came within one stroke of the 8-under 292 single round school record, which was set on Oct. 25, 2016, in the third round of the Incarnate Word Lady Cardinal Classic.

Following Saturday's 36 holes of play, SFA holds a two-round total of 32-over 600 and owns a five-stroke lead over Creighton and Illinois State, in addition to sitting ahead of Montana State, Weber State and Idaho State in the 18-team tournament field.

Senior Erica Lautensack leads all Ladyjack golfers and is tied for ninth among 104 total participants after chiseling four strokes off her score between the first and second rounds. Carding a 2-over 73 on the first 18 holes of play, Lautensack tied her season-best single round score with a 2-under 69 to own a two round tally at even-par 142. She sits just seven strokes off the lead, which is held by individual competitor Delaney Elliott of Montana State (7-under 135), and six strokes behind individual golfer Maddie Herzog of North Dakota State and Chanikan (Pluem) Yongyuan of Southern Utah, who are tied for second place (6-under 136).

Junior Alexandra Batista shot a career-low 3-under 68 on the par-71, 5,919-yard course Saturday morning and is tied for 35th with a 36-hole score of 5-over 147. Senior Jamee Jorgensen is tied for 74th on the leaderboard after carding a 12-over 154 on the first day of play, while junior Paola Cortes sits just three strokes behind Jorgensen with a 15-over 157. Sophomore Kelly Yang rounds out SFA's competitors in Arizona, posting a 16-over 158 through the opening two rounds.

Gonzaga leads the Red Rocks Invitational with a two-round score of 1-over 569, while Cal State Fullerton (5-over 573) is four strokes off the lead in second place and Southern Utah (6-over 574) five strokes from the lead in third.

The two-day, 54-hole tournament will conclude Sunday with the third and final round beginning at 10:30 a.m. CST in a shotgun start. The Ladyjacks are paired with Creighton, Illinois State and individual competitors for Sunday's final 18 holes of play and will tee off of holes 11-14. Lautensack will start off of hole 11 as Batista and Jorgensen will begin on hole 12, Cortes on hole 13 and Yang hole 14.
