Men’s Golf Shoots Third-Lowest Round of Season at Border Olympics Monday

‘Jacks card a 4-under 284 in opening round of the University of Houston’s Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas
LAREDO, Texas – The SFA men's golf team got off to a hot start at the University of Houston's Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas, Monday morning, carding the third-lowest single round score this season with a 4-under 284. Following the opening round of play, the Lumberjacks sat just 12 strokes off the lead and now own a cumulative score of 3-over 579 following Monday afternoon's second round (7-over 295).
SFA sits in 13th place among a highly-competitive 16-team tournament field, which includes two top-45 programs according to Golfstat in No. 20 Arkansas State and No. 45 Campbell.
Senior Angelo Leyvani leads all 'Jacks and is tied for 15th among 94 total golfers after carding a 4-under 68 on the opening 18 holes of play and notching a 1-over 73 in round two for a day one total of 3-under 141. Sophomore Steven Fabik posted a 2-under 70 on the par-72, 7,375-yard course Monday morning and turned in a 2-over 74 in the second round tie sit tied for 40th with an even-par 144. Likewise, senior Jake Hendrix owns an even-par 144 score and is tied for 40th after carding back-to-back rounds at even-par 72.
Sophomore Justin Benson tallied a 6-over 150 Monday and is tied for 75th, while freshman Alec Brown recorded a 9-over 153 and redshirt sophomore individual competitor Austin McKinney registered an 18-over 162.
Nationally-ranked Arkansas State leads the Border Olympics following the first day of play with a team score of 31-under 545 as the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley sits 11 strokes off the lead at 20-under 556. Both fellow Southland Conference member Sam Houston State and tournament host Houston are tied for third with two-round totals of 18-under 558.
Matthew Cole of Arkansas State carded scores of 5-under 67 and 7-under 65 Monday to lead all golfers with a 12-under 132. A trio of golfers – Arkansas State's Zan Luka Stirn, Houston's Alexander Frances and UTRGV's Alvaro Hernandez – are just one stroke off the lead at 11-under 133 following the first two rounds.
The two-day, 54-hole Border Olympics will conclude Tuesday morning with the third and final round getting started at 8:30 a.m. in a shotgun start. SFA is paired with Houston Baptist, Bowling Green and Southern Miss for Tuesday's third round and will tee off from holes 12-15. Leyvani is set to begin on hole 12 while Hendrix will start on hole 13, followed by Benson and Fabik teeing off on hole 14 and Brown hole 15. McKinney will start on hole 18 and has been paired with other individual golfers from Lamar and ULM.
