Ladyjacks Undefeated on Opening Day of Sunshine State Winter Classic

SFA bowling posts a 5-0 record on day one of play in Orlando, sits in third place following opening Baker matches
ORLANDO, Fla. – Five Baker matches played and five victories for the SFA bowling team Friday at the inaugural Sunshine State Winter Classic inside Boardwalk Bowl in Orlando. Making their first appearance in the state of Florida since 2016, the Ladyjacks wasted no time in making the best of it.
Posting four wins over nationally-ranked opponents, seventh-ranked SFA sits in third place among the tournament's 14-team field with a pinfall total of 4,944. Third-ranked Nebraska leads the three-day event after going 2-3 Friday but collecting 5,081 pins, while fellow Southland Bowling League member and second-ranked Vanderbilt is in second place with 5,029 total pins and a 3-2 mark.
The Ladyjacks began the day with a 974-888 triumph over Florida A&M, bowling three games over 200 and finishing ahead of their opposition in the second, fourth and fifth games of the match. Despite rolling just one game over 200, SFA topped 12th-ranked Delaware State 898-852 behind three game wins and a 209 game four.
Taking on Southland Bowling League adversary and 25th-ranked Youngstown State, the Ladyjacks turned in their best performance of the day by recording 1,046 pins, compared the Penguins' 961. SFA notched a 201-148 game one win before turning in a 215 score in game three and reaching an impressive 247 in game four. Against No. 2 Vanderbilt, the Ladyjacks racked up another 1,000 pins with a 1,002-956 match victory, which included a 237 game two and a 213 game five.
SFA closed out the day with a third-straight 1,000-pin performance, besting No. 18 Maryville by 20 pins (1,023-1,003). Winning the first three games of the match, the Ladyjacks rolled four-straight games over 200 as they posted scores of 223, 215, 225 and 216, respectively.
The Sunshine State Winter Classic continues Saturday morning with five traditional team matches getting underway at 7:25 a.m. CST. SFA is set to face 14th-ranked UAB to begin Saturday's play, before taking on No. 9 Tulane, co-host and 20th-ranked Sacred Heart, No. 22 Monmouth and Bethune-Cookman.
Sunday, one final traditional team match will wrap up pool play at 7:25 a.m. prior to two rounds of best 4-of-7 bracket play Baker matches. Seeding for bracket play Sunday will be determined by each team's pinfall total from Friday's Baker matches and the six traditional team matches.
