Women’s Golf in Fourth Place Following First 36 Holes of Islander Classic

Ladyjacks sit in second place following first round of play, three SFA golfers among tournament’s top 15 through two rounds
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – After the opening 18 holes of play were complete, the SFA women's golf team sat in second place at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Islander Classic held at the Corpus Christi Country Club with a 12-over 300. Through two rounds of golf, the Ladyjacks are in fourth place among the 11-team tournament field with a 36-hole total of 34-over 610.
Two SFA golfers sit among the Islander Classic's top 10 and three are among the top 15 following Monday's first two rounds of play. Senior Erica Lautensack shot a 1-over 73 on the par-72, 6,045-yard course Monday morning before chipping in a 4-over 76 in the afternoon to tie for fifth among 60 total golfers with a two-round score of 5-over 149. Likewise, fellow senior Jamee Jorgensen sits within the top 10 after carding scores of 3-over 75 and 4-over 76 in the opening two rounds to tie for 10th with a 36-hole total of 7-over 151.
Junior Alexandra Batista is just one stroke behind Jorgensen following the 36 holes of play after notching a tournament-best 1-under 71 in the first round and claiming a double-round score of 8-over 152 to sit tied for 12th in the individual standings. Improving her score by four strokes in between the first and second rounds, junior Paola Cortes shot a 5-over 77 in round two to tie for 21st with a 36-hole tally of 14-over 158.
Competing as an individual, freshman Zayda Cedillo (23-over 167) rose six spots on the individual leaderboard between the first and second rounds and is tied for 42nd, while sophomore Kelly Yang (24-over 168) is tied for 46th.
Two-time defending Southland Conference champion Houston Baptist leads the two-day, 54-hole event after posting a 2-over 290 first-round score and carding a 14-over 302 in the second round to hold a 15-stroke lead at 16-over 592. Tournament host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is in second place with a 31-over 607, while Southern Illinois sits just two strokes ahead of the Ladyjacks with a 32-over 608.
HBU's Kaity Cummings and UT Rio Grande Valley's Julie Lucio (2-over 146) are tied atop of the individual standings with a three-stroke lead heading into Tuesday's final day of play. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Autumn Bynum (3-over 147) and HBU's Lexi Brooks (4-over 148) are the only other golfers separating Lautensack from Cummings and Lucio's lead.
The third and final round of the 2019 Islander Classic will conclude the tournament Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. SFA has been paired with UT Rio Grande Valley and the University of the Incarnate Word for the final 18 holes of play. Lautensack will tee off from hole five, while Jorgensen will begin on hole six, Batista hole seven, Cortes hole eight and Yang hole nine. Cedillo will tee off from hole 15 with other individual competitors from Prairie View A&M and McLennan Community College.
