Men’s Golf Starts Spring Season Strong with Third-Place Finish at LaTour Intercollegiate

‘Jacks finish as top Southland Conference team at tournament, tie second-lowest score in final round
MATTHEWS, La. – Competing in its first tournament of the spring, the SFA men's golf team tied the second-lowest score in Tuesday's final round of the LaTour Intercollegiate in Matthews, Louisiana. The Lumberjacks, who shot a 9-over 297 on the final 18 holes of play at the LaTour Golf Club, were the top Southland Conference finisher among seven total league members competing at the three-day, 54-hole event.
SFA completed the tournament with a two-day total of 22-over 886 to place third, finishing ahead of six fellow Southland member teams and just one stroke behind runner-up Samford (21-over 885).
Senior Jake Hendrix turned in his best finish of 2018-19 by tying for fifth among 67 total golfers with an even-par 216 after shooting an even-par 72 in Tuesday's final round. Fellow senior Angelo Leyvani claimed his fifth top-20 finish of the season as he placed 12th with a three-round tally of 5-over 221.
Rising seven spots on the individual leaderboard between the second and third rounds, sophomore Steven Fabik tied for 18th after carding an 8-over 224 on the par-72, 7,170-yard course across the two days. He shot a 2-over 74 on the final 18 holes of play, while freshman individual competitor Alec Brown tied for 28th with a 54-hole total of 11-over 227.
Much like Fabik, freshman Isiah Henderson climbed several spots on the individual leaderboard between Monday and Tuesday, notching a 2-over 74 in the final round to finish 31st with a cumulative score of 12-over 228. Seeing his first action in the Lumberjacks' scoring lineup, freshman Johannes Gudmundsson tied for 33rd with a three-round total of 15-over 231.
Texas-Rio Grande Valley captured the LaTour Intercollegiate title by 16 strokes, carding a 5-over 869 as a team, while the University of the Incarnate Words' John Hill and Tennoshin Ogawa of Texas-Rio Grande Valley split the individual championship with two-day scores of 3-under 313. Prairie View A&M's Laurence Crez and Samford's Harlan Winn both finished one stroke off the lead to tie for third with final tallies of 2-under 214.
