Ladyjacks earn victories over nation’s 10th and 21st-ranked teams in Dallas Friday
DALLAS – On opening day of the SFA bowling team's fifth annual Stormin' Ladyjack Classic at USA Bowl in Dallas, the Ladyjacks defeated a pair of top-25 teams and sit in third place among the tournament's 12-team field. SFA earned Baker match victories over 10th-ranked North Carolina A&T and No. 21 Louisiana Tech Friday, totaling 4,734 total pins and remaining within striking distance of tournament leader No. 5 Sam Houston State.
The fifth-ranked Bearkats went 4-1 on the first day of competition and hold a pinfall total of 4,961 to sit atop the three-day event, which features the nation's top five teams according to the most recent National Tenpin Coaches Association's (NTCA) Top 25 poll and eight of the top 10. The Ladyjacks are just 103 pins behind third-ranked Nebraska, who sits in second place with a pinfall total of 4,837 and a 3-2 mark.
A 951-883 win over 10th-ranked North Carolina A&T began the day for SFA as the Ladyjacks took game one of the match by a score of 190-155 and went on to claim game three 238-169 and game five 198-188. Following their opening match triumph, the Ladyjacks struggled against No. 13 Wisconsin-Whitewater, who opened up the contest with back-to-back 200-pin games en route to a 946-884 match win.
SFA's second mark in the win column came in match three when the Ladyjacks out-bowled 21st-ranked Louisiana Tech 960-821. Earning a game one win in convincing fashion (201-138), SFA rolled a 213 in game three and claimed game five by nearly 40 pins (185-147). Against top-ranked McKendree, the Ladyjacks fell just 31 pins short (983-952) and collected a 204 and a 201 during wins in games two and three.
Despite bowling its highest pinfall total of any match Saturday, SFA's 987 was not enough to top No. 5 Sam Houston State's 1,007. After getting off to a slow start in the match, the Ladyjacks turned in impressive games of 236 and 242 to take games three and four.
Sophomores Sarah Voiers, Dakota Faichnie and Sarah Gill were joined by seniors Dakotah Hazlewood and Paige Beeney, and freshman Carlen Beyer in Friday's Baker match action.
The 2019 Stormin' Ladyjack Classic resumes Saturday morning with five traditional team matches starting at 9:25 a.m. On Sunday, a sixth and final traditional team match will be bowled at 8:30 a.m., before two rounds of best 4-of-7 bracket play Baker matches determine a tournament champion with seeding based team's pinfall total from Friday's Baker matches and the six traditional team matches.
Sixteenth-ranked Central Missouri, No. 24 Adelphi, third-ranked Nebraska, No. 2 Vanderbilt and fourth-ranked Arkansas State all await SFA Saturday for traditional team match play. For Sunday morning's final traditional team match, the Ladyjacks will take on No. 9 Tulane.
