Ladyjacks sit in fifth place among 10 of the nation’s top 11 teams after day one of competition
ARLINGTON, Texas – With 10 of the nation's top 11 bowling programs and every NCAA bowling national champion present, the SFA bowling team claimed a pair of top-seven victories on opening day of the 2019 Prairie View A&M Invitational in Arlington. The 10th-ranked Ladyjacks began the three-day event held inside the United States Bowling Congress' (USBC) International Training and Research Center with Baker match wins over No. 7 Fairleigh Dickinson and fourth-ranked Arkansas State.
SFA sits in fifth place among the ultra-competitive 12-team field after going 2-3 in Friday's competition and claiming 4,861 total pins. The Ladyjacks are tied in pinfall total with Arkansas State, who is in fourth place, while fellow Southland Bowling League member and defending national champion Vanderbilt owns the lead after going 5-0 Friday and tallying 5,080 pins.
Coming off its fourth tournament win in program history, SFA earned game one wins against both 11th-ranked North Carolina A&T and No. 2 Nebraska but couldn't top either team. Despite taking three of the five games in their bout with the Huskers, the Ladyjacks were outdone 966-907 before getting in the win column.
Rolling a 200 in all but one game versus seventh-ranked Fairleigh Dickinson, SFA bowled a 234 and a 246 in the final two games of the match to earn the triumph, 1,072-1,057. The Ladyjacks used a strong comeback to defeat No. 4 Arkansas State for their third straight match win over the Red Wolves. SFA followed up a 204 game four with an impressive 266 game five to earn the match by a tally of 1,016-954.
A mere nine pins (1,006-997) separated top-ranked McKendree and SFA in the Ladyjacks' final match of the day with the Purple and White posting three 200-pin games in the affair.
Five traditional team matches starting at 9:25 a.m. await the Ladyjacks Saturday as SFA will bowl against No. 3 Vanderbilt, Texas Southern, sixth-ranked Tulane, No. 5 Sam Houston State and eighth-ranked Maryland-Eastern Shore. The Ladyjacks will wrap up pool play Sunday morning at 8:25 a.m. with their sixth traditional team match of the tournament versus host Prairie View A&M.
The 2019 Prairie View A&M Invitational champion will be crowned Sunday afternoon following two rounds of best 4-of-7 bracket play Baker matches. Seeding for Sunday's bracket play will be determined by team's pinfall total from the first 11 matches of the event.
