SFA wins three of five baker matches
Day One Results | TRACK Kat Klash
HOUSTON - The third-ranked SFA bowling team posted wins in three of its five baker matches on the opening day of the TRACK Kat Klash Friday at Emerald Bowl.
After the opening day of the three-day tournament, the Ladyjacks sit in seventh place out of 16 teams and have accumulated a pinfall total of 4,611 - 336 fewer than Nebraska who currently sits atop the leaderboard.
In their opening match of the day, the Ladyjacks fell behind Jackson State 215-160 after game one but were able to get much of that deficit back with a 191-161 triumph in game two. Wins of 204-190 and 205-178 allowed SFA to gain the separation they needed to lock down a 931-915 win over the Lady Tigers.
Building on its comeback win in the first match, SFA set the tone early in its match against Upper Iowa by opening up a 202-159 lead over the Peacocks after the opening game. Wins of 186-130 and 206-157 in games two and three helped the Ladyjacks put more distance between themselves and the Fayette, Iowa-based institution. SFA completed its 984-809 victory by winning the fourth set 221-192. Although Upper Iowa collected a 171-169 win in the final game, it mattered not.
A rematch of the 2016 NCAA National Championship match saw the Ladyjacks duke it out with Nebraska. Unfortunately, the Huskers prevailed by winning four of the five games in their 938-881 victory.
Another setback for SFA came before it picked up its third and final win of baker match play. Pitted against Sam Houston State, the Ladyjacks dropped four of five games to the Bearkats and fell 965-822. The Ladyjacks' lone win in the match came in game three when they outscored the Bearkats 188-174.
Outside of a 10-pin loss in game two to Duquense that cut their 39-pin edge to 29 heading into the third game, SFA faced little resistance against the Dukes in the fifth and final baker match of the day. A 993-900 win over Duquense saw the Ladyjacks blow things open with a 195-147 win in game five.
SFA returns to Emerald Bowl at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning for day two of the TRACK Kat Klash. Day two will see SFA take part in five-person team games.
