Ladyjacks win one of five baker matches
HANRAHAN, La. - The defending NCAA titleholders opened up their 2019-20 campaign Friday morning at Colonial Lanes as third-ranked SFA bowling team was one of 16 teams who opened things up at day one of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational hosted by Tulane.
Following five baker matches, the Ladyjacks sit in fifth place with a pinfall total of 4,776. SFA won one of its five bouts Friday to help it sit among the top five headed into day two of competition Saturday morning.
Friday's first matchup pitted the Ladyjacks against seventh-ranked Maryland-Eastern Shore and SFA won just one of the five games (the last one) and fell 956-893.
The second match pitted SFA against their longtime Piney Woods rival Sam Houston State. Both squads bowled a 192 in the first game but the Bearkats won each of the next three to open up a substantial lead. Though the Ladyjacks narrowed the gap with a 214-188 victory in the fifth, Sam Houston State emerged as the winner by a 998-937 tally.
In their lone win of the day, SFA hammered Grambling State 1,019-611. The Ladyjacks' third match of the day, SFA jumped out to a 175-111 lead after the opening game and never looked back. SFA's best round of the day came in the second game of its showdown with Grambling State as the Ladyjacks posted a pinfall total of 238 - one of nine 200+ games on the day.
A 187-148 victory over North Carolina A&T in the third of five games between the two teams in match four did allow SFA to close the gap, but A&T outscored SFA in each of the last two games to secure a 973-938 win in match four.
A rematch of the 2019 NCAA National Championship ended the day and though the Ladyjacks came out of the gates and outscored Vanderbilt 226-181 in the first and 212-179 in the second, the Commodores roared back with a 209-149 triumph in game three to narrow the gap. Vanderbilt eked out wins of 224-212 in game four and 235-190 in game five to lock down the 1,028-989 win.
Fellow Southland Bowling League member Sam Houston State leads the field after the opening day having amassed a pinfall tally of 4,901. Behind the Bearkats are top-ranked Vanderbilt (4,806) and North Carolina A&T (4,800) who round out the top three. SFA finished just 18 pins back of Louisiana Tech (4,794) who sits in fourth place.
The three-day tournament is set to continue at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning with five traditional team matches.
