NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The SFA women's basketball team returns to action this week inside William R. Johnson Coliseum when the Ladyjacks face Nicholls (8-6, 2-0 SLC) on Wednesday night. Tip-off for the contest is set for 6:30 p.m., and is the first home game of league play for SFA, who owns a flawless 8-0 record at home thus far.
The contest will be televised on ESPN3, with a call of the action courtesy of Bobby Mauro. Mauro's call will also be simulcast on FM 94.7 KVLL in the Nacogdoches area. A link to the live stats and game notes for the matchup are available above.
Owning a Southland-best 10-3 record (1-0 SLC) and receiving votes in the Collegeinsider.com Top 25 Mid-Major poll, the Ladyjacks have been as advertised in the first half of the season, and owe much of their success thus far to their play at home. The 'Jacks have now won eight straight games at home, and are 59-11 at home since 2013-14. Ranking near the top of the Southland Conference in both scoring offense (70.5) and scoring defense (58.9). SFA also ranks second in three-point shooting (.335) and first in made three-pointers per game among SLC programs.
The tale of the tape for Nicholls starts and ends with Cassidy Barrios, the 2017-18 Southland Conference Player of the Year and leader of nearly every statistical category for the Colonels. The 6-0 forward is a one-woman show for Nicholls, pouring in conference-bests of 20.8 points and 10.8 rebounds per game. Her statistical prominence has earned her acclaim around the conference, resulting in four Player of the Week selections despite team results. The Colonels sit at 8-6 overall and 2-0 in conference play, having beaten Northwestern State and Incarnate Word in their first two league games. The Colonels average just about 65 points per game and give up about 66, ranking near the middle of the conference in both categories.
For SFA, victories have come easily at home and less so on the road, with the team's first true road win coming in the Southland opener versus Southeastern Louisiana last Wednesday. That victory gave Mark Kellogg a 4-0 record in conference openers during his tenure at SFA, and was a gritty victory earned on a night in which SFA's offense was out of sync (23 turnovers). Junior Chanell Hayes leads the team with 14.7 points per game, while Imani Johnson's strong senior campaign continues with averages of 10.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. Making her first four starts of the season in the recent stretch of games, Alyssa Mayfield is averaged 10.5 points and 8.0 rebounds during that span, helping to give the Ladyjacks a strong inside presence.
The matchup with Nicholls is the opening of a three-game homestand for the Ladyjacks, during which they play host to the Colonels, Northwestern State and New Orleans in a seven-day span.
