Pair of Lumberjacks represent half of 4.0 student-athletes on conference’s all-academic team
FRISCO, Texas – Sophomore safety Gavin Roland and graduate student offensive lineman Hayden Scott each earned a spot on the Southland Conference's 2018 Football All-Academic Team, which was released by the league office Tuesday afternoon. The pair of Lumberjack football players are two of only four student-athletes who hold a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point average among the 24-man all-academic team.
Roland was an automatic selection onto the Southland All-Academic Team after garnering College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Google Cloud Academic All-District® First Team accolades. A biology major, Roland was a CoSIDA Google Cloud Academic All-American® candidate and has been a Southland Commissioner's Honor Roll member. Twice named to the SFA President's List, Roland played in all 10 of the Lumberjacks' games in 2018.
The League City, Texas, native finished the season with 18 total tackles on the gridiron, including making 12 individual stops. Roland also had his first career fumble recovery on Oct. 6 in the 93rd Battle of the Piney Woods against then 16th-ranked Sam Houston State inside NRG Stadium in Houston.
On pace to graduate with his master's in professional accountancy, a five-year program that includes both undergraduate and graduate degrees, Scott is a four-time member of the Southland Commissioner's Honor Roll. He has appeared on the SFA Dean's List twice and started all 10 games for the 'Jacks this past fall, including nine at center and one at left guard. A native of Spring, Texas, Scott completed his SFA career having played in 30 total games for the Purple and White with 16 starts on the offensive line.
The Southland All-Academic Team is voted upon by a head coach, sports information director and academic/compliance staff member from each school. The Southland Student-Athlete of the Year is voted upon by an awards committee which consists of one administrator from each member institution. Voting for one's own student-athlete/s is not permitted.
To be eligible for all-academic distinction, a student-athlete must hold a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA through the semester prior to the sport's championship season, completed at least one full academic year at the nominating school prior to the current season, and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competitions during the most recently completed season.
Southland Student-Athlete of the Year nominees must hold at least a 3.20 GPA and have completed at least two years of athletic competition at the nominating institution, including the most recent season.
