SFA wins first true road game of the season to begin SLC play undefeated
HAMMOND, La. – The Stephen F. Austin women's basketball team led wire-to-wire in their Southland Conference opener on Wednesday night, jumping ahead early and coasting to comfortable 62-51 victory in Hammond, La. The Ladyjacks improved to 10-3 overall and 1-0 in Southland Conference play with the victory, while Southeastern Louisiana falls to 5-7 overall and 0-1 in SLC play.
TAKING THE EARLY LEAD
After both teams started off relatively cold from the field, the Ladyjacks went on a 15-4 run over the final six minutes of the first quarter to take a 20-6 lead at the end of the frame. SLU would convert on just 3-16 shots in the frame, compared to 6-15 for the Ladyjacks.
LADY LIONS COME ROARING BACK
An 8-3 run to open the second quarter saw SLU close the gap to 23-15 with six minutes left to play in the half. From there, five points from Alyssa Mayfield matched five points from the home side in the remainder of the quarter, and the two teams went into the halftime break separated by the eight-point margin, 28-20.
PUTTING THE GAME ON ICE
Using a 9-1 run midway through the third quarter, the Ladyjacks extended the lead back into double-digits and seized control of the contest thanks to the energized play of Mayfield. The sophomore scored eight of her team-high 20 points in the third quarter and also continued her impressive night on the glass.
After outscoring SLU 19-9 in the third quarter to regain a comfortable lead heading into the final frame, the 'Jacks weathered a furious final rally by the Lady Lions and a game-high 22 point quarter by them to win by 11 points.
TOP PERFORMERS
Alyssa Mayfield scored a team-high 20 points and matched her career-high with 11 rebounds to record the second double-double of her SFA career. Stephanie Visscher notched 14 points on 5-10 shooting and also grabbed six rebounds in the victory.
Overall, the Ladyjacks finished 20-43 (46.5 percent) from the field and 7-20 (35 percent) from beyond the arc. SFA earned 21 free throw attempts and knocked down 15 of them for a 71.4 percent clip.

• SFA improves to 4-0 in Southland Conference openers under head coach Mark Kellogg.
• The Ladyjacks hit seven three-pointers in the contest, and have now hit at least seven treys in 10 of thirteen games this season, owning an 8-2 record in those games.
• Chanell Hayes' first quarter trey gives her 118 for her career, tying her for 10thall-time on SFA's career made three-pointers.
• SFA is 4-2 when scoring between 60-70 points this season.
• Mayfield's 20-point game was the fifth of the season for SFA.
• SFA has now won 16 of the last 17 matchups against Southeastern Louisiana, and eight of the last nine games played in Hammond.
